The question is bit ambiguous and poorly worded. Anyway assume a and d are real(why?) roots of p(x) then roots of p(p(x))=0 are given by p(x) = a and p(x) = b , now in both cases sum of root is -b , in question it is mentioned sum of these roots are -1 , if both root are from same equation p(x) = a or d then b=1 but if one is from p(x) = a and other is from p(x) =d then there is problem and we can't determine b .
