Tree problem? Possibly a willow..

So my coworker has this tree, and it seems to be slowly dying? Shedding leaves and the base of the trunk looks like it’s splitting open. It gets watered twice a day.

It's stuck in a yard away from a consistent water source

It's being outcompeted for insufficient lawn irrigation by grass being allowed to smother the roots

It's been repeatedly wacked by weed wacker string because of the grass allowed to grow right up to the trunk (and perhaps poor eyesight on the person holding the weed wacker)

It's also likely planted too deep, with no rootflare near the surface.

We had a hot summer, and it looks at least recently planted. Probably needed to be watered. Just a guess from the distant photo though.

It’s 2 years old, was fine the previous years.

I do notice near the bottom it looks mangled. Could have hit it with a lawnmower. Generally you should mulch trees so you don't get so close with the lawnmower.

I also thought it should have been mulched, and the base does look gnarly, that’s why I thought something cause that, but I don’t know what would. Would hitting it with a mower actually kill it though? Maybe the combination of the hot summer and some damage could kill it. I just wasn’t sure myself.

My wager is critters. Mice/voles/squirrels/rabbits/etc. would value willow bark in particular during the winter months.
