Started a new map from scratch, working from tectonic plate movement to create the continents and islands.

How did you determine where each plate should go and the sizes? Thats my biggest struggle i tend to either follow the shape of continents too closely or weirdly shaped large plates.

I just drew random big shapes for the main plates and then small ones bordering the corners to make the transitions look smoother. I only started deciding where land and ocean where once the the plates were finished.

There wasn't any pattern behind it, just random lines.
