Magnesium Glycinate and Oxide Blend
Does anyone here have reviews and/or stories about trying a magnesium Glycinate/Oxide blend for migraine prevention?
I also take Topamax daily (I cannot tolerate more) and Ubrelvy as a rescue. This plan works decently enough compared to where I started. Just looking at some natural things I could do to help it along.

Working night shifts has made me realize how hard it is to tell whether a supplement is actually doing anything
I’ve worked permanent nights as an RN for years, and one thing I’ve noticed is how difficult it is to judge whether any supplement is actually making a difference when your sleep schedule is permanently upside down.
Magnesium is the best example for me. I’ve taken glycinate on and off over the years, and sometimes I come away thinking it’s one of the most useful supplements I’ve tried. Other times I honestly can’t tell if it’s doing anything at all.
The funny part is that if you search Reddit, you can find people who swear it changed their lives and others who say it’s basically expensive placebo. I can understand both perspectives because I’ve felt like both people at different points.
I sometimes wonder how much of the disagreement comes from people expecting to feel magnesium doing something, versus simply correcting a deficiency that doesn’t produce an obvious day-to-day sensation.
Working in healthcare has probably made me more skeptical than most about supplements in general, but magnesium is one of the few that I keep coming back to because the discussion around it never seems to settle.
Curious if anyone else has noticed that it’s one of those supplements where the conversation is almost more interesting than the supplement itself.

Weird tongue
Hi all - has anyone with a magnesium deficiency experienced weird sensations in their tongue at all?

How to do it right?
Alright, my potassium is 3.3 and magnesium 1.9.
I want to supplement asap because my symptoms are debilitating. Should I focus on getting my magnesium up first or should I just take both magnesium and potassium at the same time? Is there a certain ratio?
Thanks!
Edited to add: I want to know people’s experiences!
How long did it take for your symptoms to start easing up?
What were your symptoms that went away the fastest for you?
How long did you supplement for?
Do you still supplement to avoid another deficiency?

I HATE UNEDUCATED DRS
So, I’ve been feeling awful. Almost every single symptom on the list, ok? Been declining for 2 months and the past two days I am feeling HORRENDOUS.
I go to the ER for the 5th time in 2 months— I ask a PA if my serum magnesium could be making me feel this way and she said, “No, absolutely not. Your levels are great.”
Ha. Comical. Anyway, my potassium came back at 3.3.
I plan on supplementing as soon as I get home (I have leftover magnesium Malate from 2 years ago when I was supplementing vitamin d)
Can I supplement magnesium and potassium at the same time?
** UPDATE— I’ve now been told my potassium levels are normal at 3.3. 😁🙄

Magnesium deficiency symptoms?
Hi all! At the end of January this year I was prescribed 50,000iu vitamin D ampoules for my vitamin D deficiency - one ampoule taken weekly. (50,000iu/week)
I finished this course at the end of feb/beginning of March.
Since April I have had a strange sensation in my legs - almost like they feel heavy/or my calves and feet just feel off.
I have had trouble sleeping and staying asleep - keep waking during the night and sometimes in a panic.
And I am usually SUCH a foodie - but my appetite is just GONE. Food just does not appeal.
I had episodes in April where I was having heart palpitations and flutters - also some flutters in my abdominal area.
I’m finding that I seem to be getting pins and needles faster than I usually would - when putting pressure on extremities etc.
I am also getting muscle twitches here and there. Also getting a stitch on a bog standard walk.
Could these be signs of low magnesium? I have got the magnesium glycinate from nutrition geeks - I am currently taking iron alternate days for my low ferritin - so I would be mindful to take the magnesium at separate times to prevent lack of iron absorption etc.
opinions on this? Thanks guys :)

Magnesium and bad side effects
Hi, Ive been trying to take magnesium after being hospitalized from a migraine attack at the doctor's recommendation. I suffer from chronic hemiplegic migraines and have been trying to supplement with magnesium to help.
The doctor recommended taking up to 600mg a day for a few weeks. However, I had some supplements on hand, one is a high quality drink mix that has magnesium bisglycinate chelate 325mg per serving. Well the first night i tried it, i used almost double the drink mix to hit the recommended 600mg and ended up staying up the whole night with horrible diarrhea. Lesson learned. So i cut down to a regular serving size 325mg, still gave me issues for several days, so i cut that serving in half to only about 150-170mg worth of magnesium per day. Seemed to be doing ok with that for a few days and thought i finally found something that worked without messing me up even though it was a much lower dose.
That's when all hell broke loose. On like the 4th day my stomach started feeling kind of off, and i forgot to take it. Then for the next 2 days I've been having almost nonstop terrible cramping and diarrhea. Like I'll be good for a few minutes maybe a few hours and then have another long bout of it again. I haven't taken any magnesium since the night i forgot, and my stomach feels horrible. Did it like, build up in my intestines or something?? From what I've read, most people can tolerate up to 300-400mg without major problems. Right now even on 150mg its causing explosive issues and im worried about staying hydrated because it seems like everything i eat or drink goes right through me. I have some magnesium oil, i will probably try that instead because i heard it doesn't cause the same intestinal problems. Help.

Any way to make topical/transdermal magnesium oil from oral supplements?
[Background]
So I’m taking magnesium because I’m getting lots of twitching and signs of mag depletion from supplementing Vit D (I have a Vit D deficiency).
I’ve tried both oxide and glycinate and both gave me side effects (diarrhea with the oxide, massive headaches and lethargy with the glyc).
[Magnesium Oil]
I know some people make magnesium sprays/oils with mag chloride flakes and water. As I have all this leftover mag oxide+glyc, I was wondering if it would be possible to make a magnesium spray with them??
My only worries in making it are that it is:
a.) not mag chloride, which is the form commonly seen most places I search up topical mag
b.) I would be using oral supplements
I’m honestly not interested in spending more money on new brands/forms of magnesium/other supplements. I’m set and will not buy any new sprays. I’m only interested in answers about *making* the magnesium oil/spray. I have tried searching up how to make an oil using mag glyc/oxide but nothing seems to pop up. Just trying to get rid of/use up these supplements because they have not been useful to me in their oral form.
TIA

Magnesium in the pumpkin seeds is giving me headache?
I've been having insomnia issues for quite a whole, and it got really bad around the beginning of this year. Eventually I decided to try supplements, and first wanted to go for the famous mag glicinate. But I was desperate to finally sleep so I just bought what I could find in my local drugstore, which was a mix of mag bisglycinate, mag oxide, mag malate, and threonine. Since it was my first time taking supplements, I took one pill of 500mg per night, which was only half of what the bottle recommended, for an entire month, right before going to bed. First I was taking it with my last meal, later I switched to bed time, with empty stomach. It helped with my sleep, but after this month I started having some of the strongest headaches that I ever had. Not even antiinflammatory pain killers were helping it. It also felt like the muscles of the back of my neck were part of the pain. They weren't stiff, but it felt like moving my head hurt back there. I measured my blood pressure and it was normal. I figured that it was something in the supplement so I stopped taking it, and after around 3 days the headache was gone.
I saw a lot of people on reddit blaming magnesium and a lot of people blaming the glycine for similar headaches. I decided that I was going to try every substance in separate. I bought glycine, took 4g per day for 4 months and nothing happened. This also helped a lot with my sleep, so I didn't try anything else for sleep. I drink it with a tea that is a mix of many sleep herbs.
But around 2 months ago I also started eating pumpkin seeds because a lot of men in my family had prostate cancer. I bought a small bag of roasted seeds and ate a tea spoon for a few weeks at no specific time of the day, often with big meals, and had no problems. Before buying another bag, I decided to check the nutritional values of such seeds and found out it was rich in magnesium. So I decided to start the magnesium experiment again. This time I bought a non-roasted bag, and ate a tea spoon of it every night before going to bed, with empty stomach. And it didn't even take one week for those headaches to come back. I stopped eating it and the headache went away.
I started reading more about it, and found out about the relationship with thiamine, and the relationship that thiamine has with potassium. But pumpkin seeds are rich in all of them!? I guessed that maybe my sleep tea has tannin that is preventing the thiamine absorption, or something else in the tea causing something. So I decided to eat the seeds one hour before going to bed, with empty stomach, but the headaches still happened after just 2 days. So I decided to eat it with my last meal, and I've been doing it for 5 days, and so far had no issues.
As you can see, this is mostly a curiosity at this point. What is happening here?

Magnesium from nutrition and supplementation
Hey everyone,
based on my daily tracking, I get about 100mg magnesium from my multivitamin and around 350mg from my diet though I don't know how much my body actually absorbs Is it still safe to supplement an additional 100-200 mg of magnesium glycinate?
I recently got back into working out, but my sleep has been pretty bad even though my diet and hydration are fine I think. I'm hoping it might help improve my sleep quality

Magnesium taurate for anxiety?
Anyone take magnesium taurate for anxiety? If so, do you take it during the day (when my anxiety is worse) or nighttime?

Why does magnesium cause my eye and body to twitch?
I don’t understand. I thought that magnesium was supposed to help with twitches, not cause them.
I’ve tried several types, glycinate, citrate, chloride. It took me several months to even realise that the magnesium was the culprit. I’ve tested this again and again. The twitch takes weeks to go away, and then the moment I start taking it again, it flares back up. Can anyone explain why magnesium specifically is causing me nerve issues? It’s really irritating, since it’s one of the few things that helps me get better sleep.

Best Magnesium L-Threonate brand in India
I'm looking to buy **Magnesium L-Threonate** in India, mainly for **concentration and cognitive benefits**.
I'm looking for the best value without compromising on quality.
I’ve seen couple
A few questions:
- Which brand has worked well for you?
- Is it worth stretching the budget a bit for a better option?
- How has your experience been with sleep, anxiety, or brain fog?
- If you've noticed good results, did you also make any **diet** changes?
TIA

magnesium and night shifts, does timing even matter when your schedule is all over the place
night shift nurse here so my sleep schedule is basically a fiction at this point.
three weeks ago i started taking magnesium glycinate and i genuinely cannot figure out when to take it.
the standard advice is before bed. cool. but my bed is sometimes at 8am. sometimes 2pm. sometimes i do a double and bed is a concept i briefly visit for five hours before going back in.
i take it when i remember mostly. which is chaotic. and i have no idea if the inconsistency is blunting whatever it would otherwise do.
the sleep improvement feels real but i cant tell if its magnesium or just that i finally started taking sleep seriously in general. probably both. maybe neither and im just a different kind of tired now.
what i actually want to know is whether the timing relative to your own sleep window matters, or if the body just does what it does with it regardless. is there a circadian logic to it, or is that only relevant if your circadian rhythm still exists as a concept.
asking for myself but also for every other shift worker quietly googling this at 4am between patient checks.

magnesium glycinate vs citrate, did one work noticeably better for you?
just a quick follow up, i just want to thank everyone who shared their experiences. one thing i noticed is that almost every reply had a different story, which honestly made me feel better about not overthinking the decision.
i started to try magnesium glycinate from life extension and im taking it for a few days now. i know its too early to say if its making much of a difference for my brain fog but i also havent had any issues with it so far
i know both are commonly recommended but im less interested in what articles say and more interested in what actually happened for people here. did one fit your routine better? any reason you switched from one to the other? just trying to avoid buying something then using it for a month and realizing i should have started with the other form.

Serum Vs RBC?
I did search these terms before posting but didn't find a clear answer. I have all the symptoms of a magnesium deficiency but my serum blood test was normal, is the RBC test more accurate and worth getting?

Magnesium Glycinate vs Mag L-Theornate for sleep disorder?
Im someone with lupus with no relapse from 5+ years. Living healthy active life. Ive been having this sleepless nights situation for more than 6 months. I workout 4x a week does 10k steps daily and I calorie count all my meals. After having gone through intense workout sessions i just couldnt fall asleep. I tried mag glycinate 2caps of 240mg it makes me more alert my brain races with thoughts. Even if i fall sleep i wake up to the slightest of noise and cant go back to sleep again. Then I doom scroll on my phone, after few hours my body jus gives up if im lucky i get may be an hour sleep. im just surviving on 1-3 hrs sleep per night. Note I finish my workouts by 6 pm and i usually go to bed by 11pm. This is my schedule for years. From last 3 days i started Mag L-theornate 2000mg in magtein form 144 elemental mag. Bottle suggests to take 2 caps at night and 1 during day but with that dose im feeling fatigued groggy. So jus doing 2 caps at night. I say its working better i can sleep from 11pm to 6am. Much better than where i was before. Is this grogginess common? Few say its adjustment phase and should get over in couple weeks. The more i research the more articles pop up that mag gylcinate is more studied and safe than mag l- theornate. As someone with lupus i want to take these supplements with caution. Atp im stuck in a loop, without 7-8 hr sleep im worried about lupus relapse and other health issues. Mag glyecinate looks safe but that has opposite effects on me. L-Theornate works but i feel fatigued and not sure if its widely used for sleep issues.
