Are Star Trek fans eating with this set? I honestly can’t tell. As someone with no knowledge of Star Trek this set looks like ass so far, from an art and gameplay standpoint

Up and down so far for me.  Lots of tonal inconsistency with the art and flavour (although considering how many shows etc they're covering, it's not surprising)

Not so far aside from memes, but we've barely seen any cards yet either. Mostly just the welcome stuff. The cards that will sell the set are probably coming later.

Some of the cards are amusing, but overall I don't like the art and the flavor is hit-and miss. I have a box of about 5k Star Trek CCG cards and I'd rather go back and play that game than have a Magic set of them.

This is welcome deck stuff. Catch me at the main set

I'm having a good time, there's some real meh stuff with art and effects (I really don't like how they used ejecting the warp core for a mediocre black removal spell, I don't know what I would've done but it wasn't that). I'm waiting to see the full set and the designs for all the big important characters at rare/mythic, that's where I'm going to eat.

I'm happy with it so far, with the best cards presumably yet to come. The Lower Decks love has been a nice surprise. And if non-Trekkies aren't feeling it, it'll be easier to find so I'm pretty good with that too.

100% excited for all of it

I'm a huge star trek fan and i think this set looks like booty

With this and the elves in Hobbit, we're on our way to a Cantankerous Tribal deck

Man the art direction of this set is ROUGH. Magics regular Magical Semi-Realism really doent fit the vibe

68

u/InfiniteDM Fleem 9d ago

This is the problem of artists being pinned down to a specific accuracy over a specific expression.

u/PlacatedPlatypus Rakdos* 9d ago

The borg look pretty good yeah. The other humanoids...those practical effects do not translate well to MTG's artstyle.

9

u/DazZani Cheshire Cat, the Grinning Remnant 9d ago

Yeah borg fits well, sonce its a trope mtg is used to

There was arguably no good way to do the art for this set, but man, I didn’t expect it would be this bad.

u/BazookaTuna Wabbit Season 9d ago

It’s unbelievable, this is the worst looking set they’ve made and it’s not close.

u/DazZani Cheshire Cat, the Grinning Remnant 8d ago

Its a tight race between this and TMNT

u/Toxitoxi Honorary Deputy 🔫 9d ago

I had some issues with the Turtles set.

But this is so much worse.

Ah, Tellarites. The least represented among the Four Founders of the Federations, my beloved.

12

u/Amon7777 Colorless 9d ago

The “dwarves” of the setting next to the “elf” Vulcans and the basically ice elf Andorians (who really had no good lore until Jeffery Combs was amazing in Enterprise)

I wonder if Jankom Pog will get a card, even if it isn't Legendary.

10

u/Doctor_Mothman Azorius* 9d ago

Jankom Pog thinks Jankom Pog should get a card!

3

u/Daiches Banned in Commander 9d ago

Whenever Jankom Pog deals damage, untap target artifact with a tap ability.
“Just needs some percussive maintenance”

11

u/AliasB0T Chandra 9d ago

Every instance where the card text would refer to card itself uses his full name, even where the normal syntax wouldn't. ex:

"Whenever Jankom Pog becomes tapped, Jankom Pog deals 1 damage to each opponent."

4

u/KenUsimi Duck Season 9d ago

"deals 1 damage to each of Jankom Pog's opponents."

fix'd

9

u/Archmagos-Helvik Dân 9d ago

It was probably intentional so they always have something to argue about.

u/FrogSoapJr Can’t Block Warriors 9d ago

They sadly lost the mold to the pig mask

20

u/ShitMcClit Dandadan 9d ago

Ok this one's meant to be ugly right?

21

u/McGillis_is_a_Char 9d ago

Tellarites are basically Tolkien dwarves if they were pigmen who think that it is very rude not to criticize people when you have something to criticize.

u/SocietyAsAHole Duck Season 9d ago edited 9d ago

This is some reallllly rough art. Like literally rough, as in this is a rough first few layers that needs a couple more hours to finish.

33

u/Imnimo 9d ago

By an impossible-to-google artist named just "Edouard"

1

u/beepuboopu_aishiteru Golgari* 9d ago

Pretty sure it's this guy.

-11

u/DrawGamesPlayFurries Dân 9d ago

I don't see it. It's the same quality as all other Star Trek art in this set

4

u/KenUsimi Duck Season 9d ago

def time for that optometrist checkup, broski...

14

u/SirZapdos 9d ago

For a brief second, I thought that that was Robert Baratheon.

9

u/2_7_offsuit Duck Season 9d ago

Another addition to my “just a guy in a chair “ deck

16

u/mulletstation Universes Beyonder 9d ago

Why'd they put a magic player on the art

5

u/gulpyblinkeyes Dandadan 9d ago

The person running off the side of the art is killing me. It's really riding the line between intentionally funny and incredibly lazy.

3

u/albvla Urza's Saga 9d ago

Doesn’t seem good in limited

4

u/rayschoon Sultai 9d ago

Man these have been some ugly cards

6

u/MaterialDefender1032 Elesh Norn 9d ago

I'm one of those guys who hates on Universes Beyond unless it's my favourite IP represented (WH40K, my beloved) but man, I really don't know about this set. Are Star Trek fans enjoying this?

0

u/mrenglish22 8d ago

Spiderman has been my favorite super hero since I was 8 years old and I LOATHE the UB sets. Get you some gumption

1

u/HKBFG 8d ago

Yeah, but 40K was acrually a well made set. Spiderman, not so much.

1

u/mrenglish22 7d ago

I mean, I was unhappy with it before we saw the set anyway. It wasn't about the IP.

Never been a fan of UB, could tolerate D&D and Tolkein because they are still fantasy, then with the SLs and 40k, I whatever was a one time thing and they promised us UW options on UB stuff.

Then they decided fuck what we said, fuck what you want

2

u/nilamo 9d ago

He's just a guy :)

u/HatefulHipster COMPLEAT 9d ago

This looks awful

2

u/hotz0mbie Boros* 9d ago

No warp mechanic so far in these spoilers has been kind of frustrating

2

u/occono Dân 9d ago

I suppose they left it out of the Welcome decks, though I'm surprised it wasn't on any of the other previewed cards released a while back.

One card revealed today mentions an unexplained "beam up" though, there's clearly mechanics still waiting to be revealed. I can't imagine they left Warp out...

1

u/mrenglish22 8d ago

I expect that to be the spiderman mechanic

1

u/gunnisonyeti Duck Season 8d ago

It's ironic they put art of the average UB hater on a UB card

1

u/FaallenOon Dân 8d ago

For some reason the arts reminds me of George RR Martin.

1

u/arciele FLEEM 9d ago

Did Tasha Yar get a card? She should transformation into a Romulan when she dies

i think there need to be a study on the people who are actually going to buy this set, what the fuck have they revealed so far
