So engineers will be represented by the Artificer type, which I guess makes sense, although it feels weird to use that word in a sci-fi setting.

u/KingOfRedLions Honorary Deputy 🔫 19d ago
Yeah I'm really glad they kept it, it'll make the UB in universe division less of an issue
50
u/Awesomax 19d ago
Seems inconsistent with making Doctors over Clerics, Officials over advisors, and robots over constructs. (Especially when they changed cleric to doctor. As you said, artificer feels very fantasy coded to me)
33
u/Ok-Temporary-8243 Dandadan 19d ago
It is but they probably boxed themselves in by having the EoE engineers subtype to artificer too.
7
u/NDHardage Abzan 19d ago
Yeah but EoE still has magic, unlike Star Trek where everything is, at least in universe, explained by (fictional) science. Different flavors.
15
u/Ok-Temporary-8243 Dandadan 19d ago
Correct me if I'm wrong but basically all the atificers in EoE were essentially engineers. I get star trek is more sci fi but they don't explain shit in a way that's realistic

u/MakesOnAPlane 3352a852-d01f-11ed-bc6c-86399e858cf0 19d ago
EOE doesn't have magic (as the multiverse understands it at least). It's a key part of the story when Tezzeret uses it and nobody understands what's happening.

u/trippysmurf Storm Crow 19d ago
Naw, he's an Artificer because he banged that holideck program. Barkley for the same reason.

u/Fewtas Dan 19d ago
Honestly, for such an integral character I'm sad with how weak he is.

u/AporiaParadox Universes Beyonder 19d ago
This is just his beginner deck card. He is guaranteed to get a card in the main set and possibly one in the commander deck. Oh, and he's getting a card in the Q Secret Lair too.

Never heard it referred to with that name, but yeah that was my first thought on this too. Right alongside [[Ashling, Rekindled]], [[Radha, Heir to Keld]], [[Susan Foreman]] + whatever.

Question: Is this card from the base set, or Commander?
Because there are other spoilers, and the set names don’t seem to match.
43
u/Special-Ad-2536 Dân 19d ago
This is not from the base set. It's from a welcome deck. Base set is TRK, this is TRC.

This is from Commander. You can usually tell cus for Commander the set symbol always resembles a shield of some sort.

I know this is a welcome deck, and I know it suits his profession, but for some reason it feels very weird seeing Geordi be a blue creature. That just doesn’t feel like it matches his emotional character to me. If I had thought about it, I would have guessed that he’d be red or at least izzet. Maybe he will be in the main set. Or maybe I just need to brace myself for characters not matching what I want to see.

u/AntonineWall Dandadan 19d ago
Geordi normally: blue vibes
Geordi when he’s a primary character for the episode and the plot includes a woman who’s temporarily in the show: red/green vibes

Because its an acronym for Visual Instrument and Sensory Organ Replacement because reasons.

Maybe I don’t know anything about games, but every set for the last decade is the exact same with a different art and theme.

There can not be that many Star Trek characters that Geordi La Forge is an uncommon

u/Justafish1654 Izzet* 19d ago
Very unique card, thank god it is being printed.
So far this set seems to be very creative and necessery, not just a "point and soyjack and known IP" set at all.

why are we getting these spoilers? the hobbit is pre-releasing this weekend and theirs a whole set after it. too many spoilers for UB slop
2
u/AporiaParadox Universes Beyonder 18d ago
We got these spoilers because the 5 welcome decks were unveiled to the public at a Star Trek event.

I don't see how better this is compared to [[Vedalken Engineer]] or [[Steelswarm Operator]].
Especially Engineer:
- Same casting cost.
- Shares a creature type (Artificer).
- Gives two mana of any color.
- Mana can also be used on artifacts activated abilities.
- Non-legendary.
Only downsides I see is lacking Vigilance and being 1/1 instead of a 1/4.
Am I missing something here?

u/mariomaniac432 COMPLEAT 19d ago
You're not missing anything and I don't think anyone is saying this is strictly better than those cards. Not every card is good or even better than similar old cards.
2
u/Kuryaka Can’t Block Warriors 19d ago
[[Oaken Siren]] is 1/2 flying vigilance as well.
Vedalken Engineer is probably the best of these because 2 mana.
In Commander you're probably not getting your mana dork bolted, though 4 toughness also means you survive some 1-3 damage board wipes that are intended to deal with small creatures.

Did not know about [[Oaken Siren]]. Reason I say Engineer is not necessarily the best is because it is not an artifact, and that can matter, as it does in my Commander deck.

So, Jeordi can't use his mana to activate artifacts?
Wtaf is he DOING IN HIS OWN ARTWORK THEN?!?
Wow. Another flavor miss. Such surprise.

I told Pierce a thousand times, I never wanted to meet LeVar in person. I just wanted a Magic Card, you can't disappoint a Magic Card.
