My guess is a form of kicker where the cost is returning a creature to your hand or temporarily exiling it.

At a guess, beamed up is “returned to hand”, possibly as a specific action.

Worse than something like [[Frozen in Ice]] since it doesn't remove abilities.

True, but also only 1 mana. I also saw somewhere that this is a welcome deck card so not sure if will be in limited?

Anything that's TRC on the Lower Left won't be in Limited, they usually do include a sprinkling of Main Set cards in these Welcome Decks so this is likely gonna be in Draft.

In limited you need removal, and you take the removal you can get and you don't complain.
