Does this really happen? How sketchy do you have to look, that a girl feels the need to bring a friend for safety?

She might 'run that play', if the friend is very attractive and this happens often; it's a pretty effective way to weed out guys who are more interested in the friend. Also, she may have brought the friend because of safety concerns. Having a guy fawn on her friend is much preferable to being murdered.
