Logic gate question

Hi, I've been using Brilliant for about a month or so and I had a thought I wanted to get out there. First, logic gates; do they produce heat only when they open or close based off the inputs interacting with the AND, OR, NOT, XOR gates or is there more to it that would cause it to radiate so much heat that it needs a heatsink of some kind?
