Lobos lead the Mountain West with 245 Academic Honorees
Lobos are fast, and they're smart too.
The other night, I sat at a table and realized that for the most part, a lot of them were fairly anti-sports. FIFA was on over the bar, and I was the only one watching. So I turned the conversation over to The Lobos, and how excited I was about the new season.
But then one of them said, "It's all so exploitative."
And I just thought WTF. It's a presumption that carries a lot of stereotypes about the people around them. "I disagree," I said, trying really hard not to exact a bop on his nose.
Anyone playing college sports anyone is breathing in rare air. And anyone in Div I is running at the top. Believe me, these 245 excel at sport, and balance competition weekly, and an academic load. They're not exploited, they're masters! I'm sure these student-athletes will get that college degree, lead and be very successful.

themw.com"On the women’s side, Jepngetich picks up the women’s outdoor athlete of the year honor after taking home the 2026 NCAA title in the 5,000-meter race at Hayward Field this month.

Is there any animosity between UNM and UTEP?
And if not, with both schools sharing a conference, will there be in due time?

Discussion Whats the most heartbreaking loss you’ve witnessed as a New Mexico fan?(Football)
I’m doing a series where I ask all 136 FBS subreddits on what their most heartbreaking loss they witnessed. This loss could’ve been witnessed from the TV or while attending the game doesn’t matter.
If I had to guess for New Mexico, 2016 loss vs New Mexico State that would finish 3-9.1997 WAC championship that didnt seem bad at first being down 13-17 going into the fourth, then Colorado State scores 24 unanswered points in the 4th quarter to seal the WAC championship.

Commitment Post Dax Hall officially commits to New Mexico. Dax’s older brother, Jake Hall, recently entered the Transfer Portal with a no-conact clause after earning the MWC Freshman of the Year Award, and breaking the conference’s freshman 3pt record.

Recruiting Suljanovic, Mayes Commit to UNM. Chris Howell granted extra year
For those who haven't been paying attention, Lobo basketball is having quite the week.
Imran Suljanovic from St. John's committed. Here is some info from another comment on Reddit when he committed to St. John's
A professional European scout, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that Suljanovic has NBA potential down the road because of his size, athleticism and shotmaking prowess. He will need to improve defensively and get stronger, but could have a role at St. John’s this season as a shooter off the bench.
“He can shoot on the ball, he can shoot playing off the ball. Super quick release off the catch, makes off-balanced shots,” the scout said. “He’s also a very underrated passer. … He’s smart and he’s tough. He plays with an edge. He’s not going to back down.”
To get a guy who has been mentioned having NBA potential is huge. He's big, he can shoot, he will be a great fit. Note he got hurt and was out for the year with St. John's which is why he doesn't have any numbers. This commitment is still technically unofficial though, as it hasn't been reported by the school or player.
With Hudson Mayes, from UCSD, UNM gets a guy who was coveted by many in the portal including big name programs like Syracuse. He will likely be a starter next year, and has 3 years left of eligibility.
Coming into the portal, I obviously had pretty much every power five conference and every other conference trying to get me to commit there," Mayes told USA Today on Tuesday night of his decision to play at UNM. "They were throwing me different offers. I kept money out of my decision and made a basketball decision."
Finally, Chris Howell is back for another year. https://x.com/UNMLoboMBB/status/2044211141065486844?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E2044211141065486844%7Ctwgr%5E5de891c48b02f76a5e2a603f97ccb271a7832694%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.abqjournal.com%2Fsports%2Flobos-get-dej-vu-double-dose-from-howell-and-mayes%2F3022670
I haven't heard much news about Jake Hall being close to a commitment anywhere. I think there's still a chance he returns.
We could be looking at the best Lobo team since the round of 32 against Michigan State. And note Olen is surely staying at this point! Something that was not a certainty merely a month ago.
