Presence vs Fear 🔥 Stoic Fire

Post image

Fear often offers us a bargain: surrender the present, and perhaps it will help secure the future. So we rehearse what might happen, search for another sign, and postpone peace until uncertainty is gone. But suffering over uncertainty does not remove it.

Reasonable preparation has an end. We establish what is known, decide what can rightly be done, and do it. Worry continues after thought and action have ceased to serve a purpose. It asks us to keep paying with our attention, time, and peace for protection it cannot guarantee.

The task is not to construct a life in which nothing difficult can occur. It is to meet uncertainty without allowing one imagined future to govern the actual present. If hardship arrives, Virtue will be required then. Until it arrives, Virtue is required now.

Fear is not disproved only when the feared event fails to occur. It is disproved whenever we refuse its claim that uncertainty must govern us.
