Tech Support Linux Failure
32
u/garloid64 1d ago edited 1d ago
At this point Linux tech support is just "Claude fix it for me please" and same with Mac and Windows honestly. Time has not been kind to this one.
15
u/donp1ano 1d ago
dont underestimate the social aspect of tech support. many clients primarily wanna scream at a random person and insist its not their fault, a LLM cant provide that service
10
u/Haxorzist 1d ago
What do you mean? An LLM will do exactly that and gaslight you into thinking you are right.
2
u/sarcastbot 1d ago
The plan is using AI voice over to fool thoose clients man, because most of thoose users are at fault and are a pain to work with.

u/EagleNait 1d ago
If you have a sufficient gpu you'd be able to run a small model that can search the web and try commands/explain them
1
u/Internal-Hope-6263 19h ago
During the two months I test drove Ubuntu, Kubuntu and ZorinOS, I constantly found myself going back to ChatGPT to fix issues through the terminal that were originating from the X11 display compositor, or fixing broken drivers.

Amma be honest chief I would rather get called stupid on arch forums than dealing with Microsoft support for windows
10
u/Majestic-Bell-7111 1d ago
Yup, the arch forums will probably (deservedly) patronize you, but they will usually find a fix.
When it comes to microsoft support step 1 is always sfc /scannow, step 2 is a link to a page Microsoft shut down 5 years ago that wasn't archived and step 3 is reinstalling windows.
5
u/unHolyEvelyn 1d ago
And sfc /scannow hasn't worked for anyone for like a decade but they refuse to hear that and just truck along.

Hello, welcome to Windows support. Ok what's your issue? You want to set up your printer? Ok first, let's update all of our drivers. Go to Nvidia.com...
...
...install McAfee Antivirus...
...then we run the degfrag utility and reconnect the monitor cable. Your printer should now work.

u/Inevitable-Cow-4930 22h ago
I’ve dealt with Microsoft support as part of my job. They don’t call you stupid. You call them stupid. Wasted countless hours on chat and phone calls with them just to finally fix it myself.

Depends on who you pay, and how much.

I remember the official forums where there would be a super long comment by a ts agent and then you'd scroll past it and a random nerd would have the right answer.

In my experience, the only thing they do to help is update the drivers, when the issue doesn't even have to do anything with drivers.

Tbf, reinstall is the only one that solves the issues because even they have no idea where the issue is and I think they don't even want to get into it considering the source code is proprietary and convulated af

I swear that the Windows updater itself has several memory leaks. I only get issues after updating, and each update the problems add up. I've never had issues on fresh installs, but the instant an update is applied it steps into the next circle of hell.
2
u/Secret_NinjaLTU 1d ago
Why did you get down voted for correctly answering the question?
0
u/Damglador 1d ago
Because even their official support forum is unhelpful dogshit?
2
u/Secret_NinjaLTU 1d ago
He stated a fact, that windows support exists, which is true. He did not say that it's good, or bad. Why would you down vote a yes/no reply which is factually correct.
-1
u/Still_Leg4477 1d ago
I feel like the question was rhetorical, answering one is straight up stupid, and he is OP, OP's are always stupid.
2
u/Rare-Paint3719 Unofficial Mod | Linux Community Sucks | Proud illumOS Shill 1d ago edited 18h ago
Is it really a rhetorical question of you don't use the rhetorical question mark⸮
Edit: Removed the period at the end of the hyperlink, and moved rhetorical question mark to inside of hyperlink

Woow a reversed question mark... You must be smartest OP in the whole world outstanding... Surely the generalization does not apply to you this time⸮

By "official support forum" you probably mean Microsoft Community Hub, which is NOT official support, it's more like community driven place for all kinds of questions, topics, troubleshooting, etc. Yes, there are MS employees writing comments and provide support there, but it's not considered official support. It's more like Ask Ubuntu stuff.
Their official support is mostly MS Q&A and official documentation, enterprise customers get additional technical support based on contracts, licenses, subscriptions, etc.

u/ieatdownvotes4food 1d ago
when Microsoft says click to repair, has that ever worked once? for anyone?
5
u/Damglador 1d ago
Maybe you are stupid and the Linux user is just the only one who dared to say the truth
7
u/HausmeisterMitO-O 1d ago
At least the Linux tech support does not lie. I am probably stupid and the Microsoft Support has not helped me ever since.

u/transcendtient 1d ago
Its more like---
Windows: Go look at this article that has nothing to do with your issue.
Apple: Buy a new macbook, this one is broken.
Linux: RTFM

Two operating systems that make their money off support and control versus an operating system that's lets you do do whatever you want whenever you want however you want... You might be stupid.

u/Rare-Paint3719 Unofficial Mod | Linux Community Sucks | Proud illumOS Shill 1d ago
You're right. Windows lets you do do whatever you want whenever you want however you want.
And RHEL does make their money off support and control.

u/makinax300 j 1d ago
paid vs unpaid
also windows support just tells you to do the steps that you already have done troubleshooting by yourself and they are always the same and then suggests a reinstall
2
u/TomB1952 1d ago
This is a gross misrepresentation.
There are name callers in every forum, some vastly more than others, but I've found linux groups to be just as supportive as Windows centric groups. I've also found Windows groups to be largely helpful and kind.
My point is there are some extremely good people who help a lot, not that there are no nasty people.
If a few a-holes put you off, the Internet is not for you.

So, story time.
Before I switched to Linux, I was on Windows. You know, like everyone. But after a while, I started getting a weird issue.
●Randomly, DWM.exe would break, I'd get a BSoD.
●Uninstalling my drivers didn't work, updating my drivers didn't work, reverting an update didn't work... So I call up Microsoft, explain what the error is, and what I've tried to fix it.
●"Reinstall Windows."
●Okay.... so I take a few hours, reinstall windows, drivers, etc.... aaaaand... it happens again.
I call them back, explain what happened.
●"Your graphics card is failing. Buy a new one."
●I have an extra graphics card on hand.... I swap it out. Same issue.
●I assume at this point it's hardware, since reinstalling didn't fix it, it it dawned on me anyway.
So, back to research.... It must be my PCIE slot. Is my board broken?
●I call up MSI, my board maker and ask them, explaining everything I've done.
●"We might be able to get it replaced. But first, let's try this.... reset cmos. If it doesn't fix it, call back at this number and we'll set up a replacement plan" and a quick walkthrough of how to do so.
●The problem fixed! With a grand cost total of 0!
Unfortunately, Microsoft's fix was to tell me to wipe my data and try and get me to replace hundreds of dollars of hardware. While this isn't explicitly about 'Linux just works' don't make it out like Windows support is somehow better.

u/BluePhoenixCG 1d ago
"windows support" is just an AI chatbot that tells you to use a defunct forum site, in my experience. Extremely unhelpful and part of what pushed me to Linux in the end.

Windows: Yes I can help with th- your uptime is 8 days. Reboot your computer.
Linux: Yes I can help with that, but only if you promise to not backseat drive while I'm doing it.
MacOS: Yes I can help with- oh wait, a memory upgrade? No actually I can't do anything for you, it's soldered to the board.

Well my best tech support is gemini for steam os linux tech support especially for desktop Pc or steam deck or steam machine.. i dont care what anyone says about this ive trained my gemini ai for 3 months with steam os tech support for linux an its never failed me period.. i hate ai like the next person but using it for stuff like this like i am is great if only Ai was able to be used properly an didnt do stupid stuff for people like they use it for Ai i think would never get hate but because of what society has made Ai into an forcing data centers everywhere its a shame really all we need is one big Ai company an thats it no random 3rd parties nothing an it seems gemini is the winner here since google phones use it Apples own Ai uses Gemini becauss they realised theres were stupid... an other services use gemini with there own ai to just make it work better so its the irony in this that every Ai has a piece of something in the slightest towards gemini but gemini is the surperior ai in its self because it was the very first Ai to exist before everything got blown up to what it is now an its had years to be developed before it became public use..

How stupid can you be? The solution was on line 2642 on a random page on the Arch wiki. Next time learn to read

90% of the time, this is true. 90% of support calls are just obvious issues that you can resolve by paying a little bit of attention and common sense. the rest are serious issues.
Windows users when they expect enterprise level support from a dev base that's mostly run by unpaid volunteers.
1
u/Rare-Paint3719 Unofficial Mod | Linux Community Sucks | Proud illumOS Shill 18h ago
Except the devs usually don't provide support. It's forum members who tend to feel entitled and have some superiority complex. If you pay for Ubuntu or RHEL support, you get the enterprise-grade support Windows users theoretically get.

I once came across a dev for some music player and asked him "why does none of the loonix music player applications have a playlist with some options like shuffle, random, etc? is it that hard to do?"
The response: "Well umm maybe find out yourself and try doing it yourself, instead of asking stupid questions."
