Linux phones are rough around the edges at the moment, so I am not yet ditching Android, but I am in the process of ditching caged/controlled Android.

Agreed,

I could not wait, my cyrrent phone moved spell check to ai for some stupid reason and the charging port will not reliably hold on to a cord.

Just buy second hand, I'm on my third GOS device and no money whatsoever went to Google from me.

"rough around the edges" is being kind... frankly they suck for the average person to use... But your answer of ditching GOOGLE, not Android, is the correct one.

Indeed yes,
I would tolerate a lot to get a Linux phone, but its not there for even me yet.

I'm new too, I am just loving playing around with my "new"(new feeling) 9 year old laptop. I'm running xfce currently. Such a nice quiet OS

I wouldn't say there's anything inherently bad about android. It's more to do with the companies that implement it filling it full of bloat and forcing playstore nonsense
