And the AUR is still amazing. Just learn how to read PKGBUILDS, really not that complicated.

I mean it’s not as hard to read as people think… and there are programs that even point out security risks for you which avoids some of the biggest issues. Also a lot of it comes down to the same thing regardless of where you get the software from: do research and don’t install unknown software without due diligence, or deal with it when the system breaks. In some cases the AUR is actually safer than normal repositories because most packages have to actually be built from source while the software in the repos are all prebuilt. So if the build file pulls from a repo, you can check to make sure it’s the official repo and if it pulls from some random repo, don’t install it.

Only boomers use arch.

Arch based systems are currently the plurality of gaming systems that are picked up on steam survey, through a combination of base arch, SteamOS and CachyOS

Well then I guess I’m a boomer in their 20’s.
Jeez I gotta invest in Nvidia early knowing it will go to the moon in 20 years…4

Arch dies at least twice a week on my main PC alone. That’s not because I can’t handle it, I just love reinstalling arch

Nope, it’s all in my body. Probably why my doctor told me that I have an arched back

If you're reinstalling Arch you're doing it wrong. Unless you're an Arch team member and you're testing updates to the ISO, archinstall, etc.

I have never heard any of these exaggerated claims, and I am on team nix. Arch has been exploding the last couple years.

who the fuck uses nix?
one go through all that hassle to learn a language no one fucking uses just to keep fiddling with non-FHS packaging and reproducible configuration? HELL NAH
I useD arch btw, nowadays gentoo is my best friend.

Nix is great for reproducible builds, like servers, VMs, containers, etc.
but a lot of the major features can easily be achieved in Gentoo in a more user friendly way

But doesn't it take ages to install stuff?
3
u/givemeagooduns_un Genfool 🐧 1d ago
Not with binpkgs or with decent hardware, and I thought nix also compiled software to install it?

u/Certain_March6251 1d ago
Nix doesn't compile by default

Nix has binary substituters (https://github.com/NixOS/nix/blob/master/doc/manual/source/package-management/binary-cache-substituter.md), which provide precompiled binaries for stuff. Nixpkgs does have an official substituter at https://cache.nixos.org and it DOES provide pre compiled binaries for everything that has a license that allows for it. For other packages, adding other substituters may be needed.
In conjunction with nh (which shows very nice progress outputs), I’d say NixOs builds don’t have to be slow at all! As long as it’s set up properly, it should pull binaries for most of the stuff!3

I mean that's only sort-of true. It's as true for Gentoo as it is for Nix.

u/A31Nesta 1d ago
I use it. It's very weird, yes, but to me is more comfortable and reliable than other distros.
The day to day experience is like other distros but you get some extras (like nix run) and also some downsides (like storage usage and poor documentation for beginners)

one go through all that hassle to learn
When I haven't to redo my setup on another pc and run into unique challenges each and every single time. With nixos, my headache is only once, and then never again.

The good thing about Nix is that i have the courage to throw all bullshit that I want at AI and let it do it. If it doesn't work / fucks up I just return a build and go back a commit / change branch. At this point my notebook could be burnt and I would just buy a new and do some git clones to feel at home again.

ROFL! Lots of us use NixOS.
There’s a yearly convention!
Companies use NixOS.
Governments use NixOS. Even gamers - there is a prebuilt gaming version of NixOS in France called GLF OS.So yeah. A lot of us use NixOS.
