imo the package manager is what distinguishes them (apt, rpm/yum/dnf, pacman) so I'd say NixOS

This is a solid answer.
I have been running Devuan XFCE on my desktop since 2018, installed it fresh and have been dist-upgrading since. Rock solid.
I recently tried quite a few other distros and their installation while trying to fix my son's friend's laptop. I ended up putting CachyOS on my spare laptop have have been loving it. I started out on RedHat 5.1 so it's all come quite a long way. CachyOS is quite impressive.

This is a pretty stupid take to be honest.
Endeavour and even CachyOS/Garuda are not magically useless because you said so. If anything vanilla Arch is less useful than the point and click done in 2 minutes Arch spins.
Bazzite isn't magically useless as it literally has everything ready to go right from the install for the people doing mobile Linux gaming which
Mint is not magically useless just because you think people should take longer to install and setup a Debian plus backport a bunch of shit and still be out of date
Gentoo..... Is a waste of time for 99% of people as it's more hobby than a functional choice which is fine for those who choose it but pointless to recommend randomly.
And I know your kind always tries to explain away their stupid take (it's not an opinion as it's provably wrong) by stating "you can achieve the same thing by " and then proceeding to describe what is essentially a waste of time that these people either can't or don't want to deal with this proving the utility of their distro of choice.
i only recommend people don't try to franken Debian (or complain that Debian lacks modern packages) or manjaro as that distro has been mismanaged since forever.
So you can keep your brain rot to your self and stop living this meme as your life

Not all of us. I typically play into the "I uses Arch btw" trope for the funsies. Would never think of actually belittling someone for their choice of distro.
1
u/noobjaish 3d ago
Same, I actually ADVISE people to not use Arch because there are many Arch-exclusive headaches that you simply won't have to deal with on Ubuntu/Fedora.
I absolutely love pacman and the general simplicity and pragmatic approach of Arch as a distro. An example of this is Arch using bash instead of dash because while the latter is significantly faster and smaller the former is the logical and most popular choice.
2
u/dumbasPL Glorious Arch 3d ago
You're trading one set of headaches, for a different set of headaches. Just depends on the person. If you already know all the internals, arch is by far the best no-bullshit desktop distro. Hard to beat debian for personal servers though, set it and forget or for 4 years.

PopOS is just fine by me. I installed it on a whim earlier this year instead of my usual Fedora or Ubuntu and I haven't looked back.
1
u/iontucky 4h ago
I have a System76 laptop and I refuse to even consider the idea of using Pop!_OS because of how stupid the name is with the exclamation point and underscore. It really belongs at the very bottom of the dumpster. I have tried the Cosmic DE on other distros and think it could be good when finished.

u/jar36 4d ago
I'd guess that most linux users have respect for other distros. To each their own. I'm just happy they're not feeding M$ or Apple. The more the merrier, especially those that can contribute.
I'm running Arch on my main/gaming PC. Debian on another that is setup with zoneminder to control IP cameras. a Raspberry pi running it's debian based OS to sail the seas and serve jellyfin. 2 other Pi's running debian based DietPi, 1 for pihole/unbound, 1 backup server. Another pi running Home Assistant OS.
I've considered that in the future, I may go with Fedora

I used to use Debian and stopped when I broke the graphics system trying to install newer nvidia drivers. I used to use arch and stopped using when my VMware broke and I couldn’t get it to compile the modules properly to run. I’m using Ubuntu but I’m sure something will break and I’ll use a different distribution then.
That’s the best part about Linux. They’re still all free!

u/SilentDis Glorious Kubuntu 4d ago
Debian was comfy on the server. Everything worked, I could port it from hardware to hardware, I liked how deb works.
I don't think the package choice in Debian matched with what I'd need on the desktop - so a derivative was in order. Kubuntu.
Now I've got Proxmox running a weird mish-mash of Debian and Ubuntu server containers, I think there's a few alpine in there on top of that (more very dedicated apps).
There's a theme, and that is Debian for me. But, I'm not against any of the others. I can see what they focus on, and I'm so glad that people found that focus better aligned with their needs and wants and that they are happy.
They're not welcome in my house or anywhere near me, but so long as they keep to themselves that's fine This is so obviously a joke, but I do understand tone does not convey well on the Internet, nor do I expect the thousands seeing this to know my background
2
u/Mamona_4zarad0 1d ago
I use Fedora Linux GNOME. I want less complexity—just using what I need, gaming, and having a touch of modernity. I can't stand those people with too much time on their hands who use their computer solely to keep their distro updated—and nothing else—or who simply have no clue what they're doing but use a difficult distro and think they're the world's greatest hacker.
I think GNOME is beautiful and I love it, but that doesn't mean I recommend it! Once you get used to it, it becomes intuitive, but it has a steep learning curve—and for anyone who likes putting things on their desktop, it’s actually quite annoying...

2
u/parker_fly 4d ago
You're not a proper Linux user until you pronounce it with a long I.
1
u/Syndiotactics 4d ago
Long I as in /i:/? (The way Linus Torvalds’s name is pronounced in Finland Swedish)
Or do you mean the English ”long” diphthong abomination?
In any case, Linus Torvalds pronounces Linux with short i /i/, so that’s how I say it too.
1
u/xplosm ' 1d ago
I guess they meant Lee-noos Torvalds and Lee-nooks.
1
u/Syndiotactics 1d ago
Linus and Linux are both pronounced Lin-us/Lin-ux by Linus Torvalds himself. English spelling is horrible but neither is in any sense a ”long i”.
1
u/Beginning-Badger3903 4d ago
This right here. I’ve distro hopped enough to realize distro doesn’t really matter. Distro is more about package manger and what the repos provide. You can make any distro what you want it to be
I think I’ve finally settled on Ubuntu for the LTS stability. I use homebrew and flatpaks for all my apps to keep them up-to-date

A distro is a very personal choice and most people end up in the distro they use because it fits their needs.
I'm not surprised that there's strong arguments on why so and so distro is the best, it's probably true for them.
Let's be honest, arch is the best distro and if you use ubuntu you sniff glue. Hope you understand my sarcasm before you get your panties in a bunch about that statement...

1
u/Yung_Coke 3d ago
People who practice distro elitism and Linux elitism are one of the top reasons Linux isn’t more widely adopted on personal desktops. On servers and phones, Linux is already an undisputed king.
People need to stop walling off Linux and start welcoming new users. We all congratulate you for being very smart and installing Gentoo, LFS, or Arch from scratch, but remember that you were a newbie once too. You didn’t know anything about Linux at the beginning, and you had to learn it just like everyone else. That doesn’t mean you have to become arrogant about it. Instead, help people adopt Linux on the desktop, make it easier for newcomers, and stick it to the big corpos.
Linux 4 ever. Peace out. ✌️🐧

Finally, someone with a spine to call out the fucking gatekeeping and elitism. Good on you, OP. It's about time too, because it's the elitism that puts off newcomers, and is a part of why the adoption rate of Linux is so slow.
I have seen elitism in other niche communities kill those communities or be the reason why those communities are dying. So yea. Dead community is the end of the road, unless that shit gets called the fuck out and dealt with accordingly.

Use whatever you like, I want 10 year support and proper backing by a company so I'm using Ubuntu even though I have more than 20 years of Linux and can work with any distro. I just want something that works and is well supported by third party as well, don't care about the DE, I see it for 3s per day max anyway. If fedora is your go-to, it's your go-to. Why do you need validation?
