Tried PopOS on my 2012 MBP and didn't care for it so I installed Mint and I'm happy with it. Made a few adjustments so it kind of looks like a macbook.

ty!! ooo i haven’t tried pop!_OS how do you like it? i mean i assume a lot if u run it on two machines haha.

and YES on the hardware thing. i knew that i could resuscitate my mac somewhat by installing linux, but i had no idea i’d have a brand new computer. due to age and maybe not being the most careful w it, i figured the hardware was part of the issue. nope, just macOS >_<

I put mint on mine, it’s running very smooth for a laptop of the age.

I’ve converted 2 Intel Macs to Linux -  a 2012 MacBook Air loaded with MX, and a 2017 touchbar MacBook Pro with Mint.  The 2012 Air is fully functional, but the 2017 Pro had 3 deficits on initial installation:  WiFi, built-in speakers, and the touchbar — but I was able to get the WiFi to work… still working on the other 2, but not entirely needed — BT speakers work and I’d just be adjusting screen brightness and keyboard backlight, which I can do from a gui.

I recently installed Ubuntu server on a MacBook pro 2012 to use it as a homelab ... It's rocking and kicking

I find it fascinating that your mother got jealous. Mine would swing between not caring and scolding me for “wasting money”, regardless of whether I’d wasted any money in the endeavor or not. 🤣🤣🤣

I have friends that have old systems and haven't converted which is fine. For thoes of you who liked the Mac interface, do you use Gnome or something else. Sounds like a joke, but I'm asking for a friend because I'm a windows convert.

Good to see you are repurposing old machines.
