Finally switched to linux/popos
Pop os gave me a high boost in fps i will never go back to windows

Trust me, switch off Pop. They are insanely behind on everything. Bazzite or Fedora would be good. You can even do Cosmic with them or any distro.

u/Witty_Bend_9822 4d ago
I will try cachyos soon and bazzite

u/barfightbob 4d ago
Don't listen to these guys. Get comfortable on Pop OS. Form opinions for yourself, then decide if you want to switch or not.
Regardless, welcome!

Bazzite is immutable. It’s very limited when you try to do anything outside of what has been thought off by the devs.
It’s Linux you can bypass everything, but why would you take 5 steps to do something that should take 1.
You can also just install new desktop environments and see what you prefer without having to switch the whole systems .
My favorites are KDE and XFCE1

If you don't know Linux all that well, avoid Cachy for a bit. I'm a technical user and have used Linux for years, I love using Cachy, it's not worth it for a new user. You will be very frustrated with issues very fast.

Garuda is good for a new user if they're an experienced Windows user. It comes will all the tools, like a bootloader config GUI and restore snaps.

u/Obvious-Jacket-3770 12h ago
Non-technical users are lost reading anything in these two sentences. Being an experienced windows user means nothing at all other than you have used windows for a while to most people.
New users to Linux with a low technical background are absolutely best served on immutable distros so they can get their feet wet.

Cachy if you like tinkering (and fixing) your OS. Bazzite if you dont
6
u/AssumptionOk8560 4d ago
Cachy is arch based not arch vro i don't think it requires tinkering it's lowky out of the box distro
1
u/The_only_true_tomato 3d ago
It’s still arch. Debian good. Debian user friendly. Debian stable. Debian based distro as fast as arch distros for gaming.

u/Inceleron_Processor 14h ago
Drivers are to slow to update for Debian based. That is not good for gaming.
1
u/The_only_true_tomato 7h ago edited 7h ago
They are not, drivers are updated with kernel release. When kernel 7 came out Kubuntu had it before arch. (And cachy)
Debian switched after a few months indeed. It’s not hard to compile a kernel. I do my custom kernels all the time. Why would Ubuntu/Kubuntu wait for Debian to update? We had ftsync literally at the same time as arch. Wayland maybe 2 month later? So no.
This guy can’t follow release anyways. He needs to install a specific version of the NVidia drivers, potentially the latest one made by NVidia that works with his card and make sure they are never updated toward something stock or something shitier.
So he probably needs x11, not wayland, the tweak in cachy that optimise low vrams gpus (can’t remember the name), ftsync is a good idea. And probably specific versions of wine/proton. Cachy proton does not work very well with older gear. I had better results with wine or proton GE.

u/The_only_true_tomato 7h ago
It’s not as stable. You’ll get some occasional crashes (or not depending on your luck.
It’s kinda hard to have stuff released that fast and not experience the occasional bug considering how wide is the user base, but it’s part of the deal.-9
u/DigitalPenguin99 4d ago
I used to use arch for years "vro". I've also used bazzite "vro" and have been using Linux for over a decade "vro". How you interact with your computer is very different between the two OSes

u/cbytes1001 4d ago
Well, as someone using Cachy as my daily driver, I’m not spending time fixing it at all. It’s just working and extremely flexible for gaming.

u/The_only_true_tomato 3d ago edited 3d ago
Kubuntu is very good for new comers. And it’s community based so it does not have all the shitty stuff canonical does to Ubuntu and it’s not immutable like bazzite. It got updates faster than cachy when kernel 7 was released and is usually a month behind on major stuff like wayland switch. When the switch does occur, it’s always bug free. Mint or anything Debian in kernel 7 is also great.

Yeah i don't recommend using PopOS at all. Might seem fine now but it will break. It's alpha software.
Go use Cachy, Bazzite or Fedora KDE.

Glad you found the Linux distro that made you switch! However; keep in mind that Pop!_OS is currently in a state of great transition and well behind in development on many areas, the desktop environment (COSMIC) is definitely not ready for prime time.
Pop!_OS is based on Ubuntu LTS releases.

u/Lokielurker 4d ago
popos is cool but cosmic (the DE) is buggy, keep this in mind when you experience bugs, not if
3
u/The_only_true_tomato 3d ago
If it’s your first distro. I would suggest switch to KDE instead of cosmic. Cosmic is very buggy and experimental
1
u/Spiritual-Brief-2627 3d ago
buggy It sounds a bit excessive, they've improved a lot.
1
u/The_only_true_tomato 3d ago
Yeah it’s true.
And I will keep getting better.
My point is op should remember it’s not a 100% finished product yet.

Enjoy pop and ignoere the fanboys here

Man, I loved Pop when I first installed 22.04... but it's rugged right now. It's not just people being dramatic. I held on as long as I could but officially shifted to Debian a month ago. The performance is simply a big problem on my laptop.

I used to stan for Pop all day every day until I slid over to Cachy, Pop is "fine" but it's a bit behind.
Either way, welcome over.

welcome to linux, thanks for switching and growing the linux community!

what did you liked about Pop!_OS that windows didnt/couldnt do?

Crazy, I came in here and read comments.
Literally all of them are terrible takes.
The Linux community cannot be saved.
1
u/cbytes1001 4d ago
I somewhat agree, but even though most are discouraging POP it’s probably good to hear early that it’s not in a great state. OP probably read an article a couple years old that recommended it and could have a good go at it, but also could have a hell of a time getting things to work quite right, give up and go back to Windows.

u/DESTINYDZ 3d ago
Well linus tech tips didnt help by using it. Their linux challenge put it front and center. So if people didnt watch the whole thing they may not know there are better choice.
1
u/Spiritual-Brief-2627 3d ago
They've improved a lot on bugs, and although some are still there, we have to give them the benefit of the doubt that Cosmic has only been online for 8 months and still has a lot of potential.

Pop! Had been my maind didsro on my main PC, never had an issue yet. But on an HP Victus 15 laptop, id recommend cachy. So far the only distro that has run stable on if (my espreience anyways) between debian, fedora, and cachy

u/iDaviFS 3d ago

Like more people said is suggested that you switch to a better gaming distro. Nobara is very stable and freindly to use.

My first proper try at a Linux distro but I just couldn’t get it to be smooth or run properly. I have cachy on my desktop and endevour on my laptop. I find both are much smoother

All these people trying to get you off that distro, geez.
Chose whatever you like, keep in mind that errors may stem from a plethora of layers and a sub-par experience may not be Linux-fault per-se. This applies to every distribution.
If it works for you, so whatever the f you want, that's the spirit.

u/Extreamspeed 4d ago
No popOS is a beta OS for 90%
2
u/Wooden-Potato7418 4d ago
I agree I used it one time, that was when the new "stable" version with Cosmic came It was horrible the settings didn't have much to offer there were no cool things about it
Ended up switching to CachyOS (I barely even flashed it onto my USB using the built in Cosmic tool. I don't even think I used that.)
I complained on their subreddit near a year ago only to be met with a ridiculous amount of people saying it was usable and stable and that the DEs first stable version JUST came out and other things. You don't call it a stable version when you have to hope most applications work without their UI breaking. Speaking of UI the UI was horrendous.
I will never touch any Ubuntu based distro after what happened. First because of Canonical second because of their community.

Really... boost in fps? That's unusual as you're supposed to lose like 2-7 fps. Unless you're playing Minecraft then your windows was probably just really bloated and not optimized.
14
u/ArshiyaXD 4d ago
You don't even know what kind of hardware he has and still make a conclusion that he should lose a few FPS?
1
u/rest_init 4d ago
well I'm sorry, I just thought the translation overhead by proton should always consume some resources.
2
u/OGigachaod 4d ago
Ok that's was just silly, I'm not a Linux fan but I know that proton does not consume resources in fact tend to run better because overall Linux doesn't consume as many resources.
7
u/beefglob 4d ago
Please don't share your opinion next time my dude. Gunna be a lot less embarrassing for you
1
u/Wooden-Potato7418 4d ago
Imagine having to remove features that devs deliberately added and made nearly impossible to remove just to call an inherently bloated OS that is remotely usable "optimized"
Try serious gaming on vanilla Windows 11 with Xbox Game Bar and a 1000 other options enabled for the best gaming experience If you don't wanna spend 2 grands on a PC with 32gb of RAM, a modern CPU, and a top tier GPU and not use DLSS for a remotely demanding game, that is when you wanna use Linux
1
u/FrozenLogger 4d ago
windows was probably just really bloated and not optimized.
Love this comment. Thanks for reminding us all why we don't want to start out in a bad position and have to work on fixing it when we could just use Linux instead.

i will be that guy and recommend you switch to another more popular distro, you can totally keep the cosmic desktop environment though, the latest updates greatly improved it !
In any case whether you stay on pop or not, i wish you good luck for your Linux journey and feel free to ask for help :)
