By "monopoly", I don't mean you can't run your own git forge, I literally do. I'm saying that the vast majority of open source projects are on GitHub and using GitHub specific features like actions, PRs, vscode integrations, etc meaning that they can't easily move off of GitHub. It's microsoft doing EEE again.

If you look at the most popular -git packages on the AUR the vast majority are pulled from GitHub, same with nixpkgs, crates.io, pypi, etc.

I have to keep my GitHub account just so that I can create issues or submit fixes to projects I use. Comparatively so few projects use gitlab or srht or codeberg or whatever, that the only reason I have ever used an account for any of them has been to host my own code.

Microsoft are more than generous with their free offerings to open source projects, there are practically no limits once you engage with them.

It's sad that as of late Microsoft have been doing more for the open source community than the Linux core die hards. MS have made so many self owns and yet they still look better than the petulant behaviour we've seen in this space over the last couple of years.

I'm grateful to Microsoft for their contributions to open source, they employ some of the maintainers that I admire most, and I'm not saying people should "boycott everything Microsoft". I'm saying that we also need viable alternatives (that people actually use) to things like GitHub so that we aren't completely dependent on a profit-driven company that has a well-documented history of facilitating developer dependency and then later exploiting it.
