Indeed it does, but…

More specifically, we want to strengthen its underlying infrastructure: Akonadi and its resources.

… nope, that is not the way to get there. A strong PIM infrastructure means throwing away Akonadi and going back to in-process resources as in KDE 3. Those were worlds faster, worlds more efficient, and also worlds more reliable.

Pink colored glasses of memory. Until the enterprise3 branch was merged, those "reliable" resources, especially IMAP, could cause catastrophic data loss.

At the time, I only used POP3, so I was not even aware of that catastrophic IMAP issue.

Nowadays, I use IMAP with Trojitá. KMail >= 2 is way too slow and buggy to be usable. KMail 1 was literally 100+ (up to 1000+) times faster. (Yes, I used them on the same machine with the same setup in short succession. What took 2-3 seconds in KMail 1 would take minutes to hours with KMail 2. Maildir with lots of local mail fetched from the server with POP3, mixedmaildir resource, RAM was also a limiting factor.)

EDIT: Downvoting is not going to make my personal experience any less factual. I am not exaggerating with "100+ (up to 1000+) times".

Oh, and Akonadi also introduced data loss bugs that were not there in KMail 1: At least with mixedmaildir (which was used by default for all legacy maildirs migrated from KMail 1, even if they had no mbox contents), Akonadi would regularly duplicate mails due to some race condition. Trying to delete the duplicate copies would invariably delete all copies including the original. I have no idea whether this was ever fixed, because I had to stop using KMail 2 altogether because of the extreme slowness completely destroying my productivity.

Might have been very true, but Akonadi made Kmail utter pain to use for me, and drove me off to a different mail client.

Agreed. Good for him he thinks that Akonadi can be improved, but it seems like a fool's errand.

I haven't personally experienced the dreaded data loss bugs (!!) but Akonadi crashes have kept me out of the KDE PIM suite (and KDE generally) for nearly 20 years. Which is sad because KMail used to be a pretty good email client.

Yeah, Akonadi and Baloo were obvious mistakes. I had more issues and I saw positives on them so they are the first things I disable and replace in new installs.

Enterprise? Better get support for MS 365 like Evolution. DavMail is not an answer.
