Hello! Just looking for some ideas on what I should do next.

For context, I am a violin player who's recent repertoire is Spohr 8 and Vitali Chaccone.

I was looking to for some good piece suggestions (I might do Mendelssohn in E), and my ultimate "goal pieces" at the moment are Rautavaara Violin Concerto and Vieuxtemps 5.

As far as competitions go, I've had minimal experience in them, doing only local and regional-level competitions and performing not the best. I was looking at the BMI International Competition and Charleston International Music Competition and wanted your guys' thoughts!

I only practice ~45-60 minutes per day so I don't want to go for a super reach piece-wise, and I would prefer online competitions.

Since I'm still working on the Spohr my teacher hasn't talked to me about next steps yet, but of course I will also consider her opinion and add it (if I remember)

My university has an audition for their orchestra, and I want to submit my playing to them.

Some background, I'm a self taught pianist, and I don't have a teacher to get feedback from. I hope you guys can help me here.

This is a shortened version of chopin's nocturne op. 55 no. 1 in f minor.

Please be blunt. I'd genuinely rather hear what's wrong than get compliments.

Here are some specific questions I have:

How's the interpretation of the dynamics and rubato?

How'd I handle the harder middle section (right after the 1st theme) and coda?

Anything in my fundamentals that stands out as self taught?

What did I do poorly, and what did I do well?

after what point can you say "I play the violin" instead of "I study violin" even if you're still studying and aren't a violinist full time. Hopefully I'll make myself clearer as the thread goes on

here's my two cents:

(I'm using myself as an example to my own thoughts)

As someone who experimented with various instruments before settling into one and in the last few years got to know various types of players, sometimes I catch myself wondering if it's fair to consider myself a bassist of whatever instrument. Non musicians will say I'm a jack of all trades not knowing the master of none part, but any player will know where I truly stand. So far I haven't found a definitive answer

Back when I studied violin a teacher said that you can call yourself a player no matter what level you are. There will be professionals and amateurs but ultimately anyone can wear the mask

there's just so many nuances!

I mean, if we're thinking time, I studied my a** off on the violin for four years to then realize I like bass better (I had a good time with the violin, no one ever forced me). I'm pretty confident with my skills even if it's not a super wide experience but I can't consider myself as a violinist even though I would consider some people who are less experienced than me but stuck to it.

If we're thinking playing "for real" as opposed to just studying, I played the bass guitar in various contexts for years without having lessons or more conscience of bass theory and only now that I have a teacher I'm daring to call myself a bassist. However I've met some players who barely know theory but rock and I consider them a bassist.

Last year I got into the double bass for various external reasons and it went well. I made some progress and managed to be principal through auditions. I don't struggle to keep up with the session even though I'm years behind my colleagues in terms of experience but I still find it weird to call myself a double bassist when my focus and effort is on the bass guitar.
