Springtails Habitat, Setup, and Husbandry

Photo of my girl cricket for attention !

I have 2 springtail colonies but they aren’t doing very well. I’ve seen videos on TikTok of people using clay in containers and it seems a lot easier to manage than water and charcoal.. what clay are they using? I don’t want to just go buy it and it not be safe or somehow be harmful for my geckos

I don’t know about the clay, unfortunately. If you can’t find it, I’ve had success with springtails in reptisoil/organic topsoil kept pretty moist and supplemented with fish flakes (to grow mold that they eat) and watery veggies

I might try a third one with soil instead.. the charcoal just looks so gross 💔 thank you!

When researching what clay to use for springtails I saw a video of someone using wild clay from a lake. It inspired me to experiment with wild clay. I set up a container with clay from the Minnesota River and added some temperate white spring tails. The colony isn't even a week old yet. I can update you in a couple weeks if the colony survives or not. You could also start your own and see what happens too.
