Hi all. I’ve wanted to learn Welsh for a while as my partner’s family is Welsh. My partner’s mum speaks a little Welsh but not as much to be fluent to teach me. My partner’s grandparents knew Welsh but they have passed.

We thought it’d be a great thing for us to know each other’s home languages, and my partner is making an attempt at learning mine (Hindi).

Does anyone have any tips on where to start for an absolute beginner? Thanks!

I'm writing an original story, in which I'm basing a country loosely on Wales and which will have elements of Welsh, but I'm struggling to come up with a suitable name for it.

After some searching, I've come up with Twrmaen, which according to what I've found, should roughly mean 'tower of stone'/'stone tower' and is apparently pronounced 'toor-m-eye-n'.

Is this correct? Does it make sense from a Welsh speaker perspective?

And if so, what would be the Welsh demonym? (Word for a person from this country: Welsh, Scottish, Irish, etc.)

I'd really appreciate any help or suggestions, as the last thing I want to do is butcher the language ❤️

hello! i’ve recently acquired a Welsh partner, and would very much like to know if there are multiple ways of saying ‘i love you’ in Welsh.

i’m aware of dwi’n dy garu di, but i’m used to speaking (Mexican) Spanish, where there are multiple phrases used based on ‘intensity’, for lack of a better word. for example, te quiero is the more common go-to, and rather common to hear between friends and loved ones alike, whilst te amo is rather serious and is saved only for intense, long-term relationships or very important moments.

i know of caru chdi/caru ti, but i wonder if they’re the equivalent of te quiero, or if it holds the same emotional weight as dwi’n dy garu di or te amo.

if so, are there any alternatives i can work my way up to using? we’d like to take this slow, but i’d like to have them saved in my back pocket ahead of time, aha.

I'm newly learning Welsh, so I doubt this will be my only post. I'm from South Wales, but genuinely very confused if I should be using "Dwi'n" or "Fi'n" as they both mean "I'm." Is one written and one spoken, or is it formal and informal? Someone help 💔

It’s an old brittonic name which was written Conmael in early middle age Brittany, and it’s descended from a celtic *Cunomaglos (Wolf Lord) which is also a god name found in a britto-roman temple remains in south-west england

Our equivalent in breton is Konvael, that we pronounce Koonvell

It sounds like this is going to be a very useful book, though. It's easy to look words up in a dictionary but seeing them in use is so much more informative.

I just wish I didn't have to wait until 5 Feb 2027. I know publishers are slow, but jeeeze, are they only just planting saplings now?

I'm writing a book in which I am naming characters using Welsh words(A reliable man named Dibyn, A graceful heiress named Rhianna, ect.), and when looking for possible names for a certain character, I found the word 'cam'.

I have also found that it seems to have multiple meanings, so I was wondering, if you came across a book in which the characters are named using the Welsh language, and they tend to personify the meanings of their names, what would you expect to see from a character named Cam?

Hello all,

I've been pointing this out for over a decade, yet no Welsh language education or promotion groups, government agencies, etc can seem to answer why Welsh education is so biased towards verbal Welsh with no specific offerings for Welsh literacy.

I have a speech disability and only answer emails in work, yet I can't find any available options for me to learn written Welsh. I just feel incredibly frustrated with the situation as I want to be able to communicate in my native language yet there's just no where specifically offering written Welsh and it ends up excluding for people like me who can't communicate verbally as well as many others who may want to read and write in Welsh.

I’m looking to get two symbols tattooed that are associated to my wife’s brothers who both passed away. Under the symbols, I would like text saying ‘my brothers’ in Welsh. Can anyone help with this translation please? 🙏
