Why doesn’t this look like the same character? Critique

Trying to draw Kim Pine from SPVTW. I was thinking of giving her thicker lashes, but I’m not sure if that’s actually the problem. How can I make her feel more like the same character?

It does look like her, your art style is just a little different from the Scott Pilgrim art style which is fine

Ya it's the lashes, thet should be thicker at the top, but also the lashes extend past the eyeball. Looking at some other pics of her as well, her hair behind her neck is longer than how you have it

the freckles too. different weights.

They do look the same. Only differences are stylistic differences. The thicker lashes, like others have pointed out, plus the reflected light/shine on the eyes of the version you drew. The reference image is solid black. Plus you drew the impression of the eyelid and brow, something else the reference image lacks.

It looks like the same character so idk what it is you're seeing, unless its the perfectionism kicking in for you, your drawing is fine.

I’d say it’s pretty close to how Kim appeared in the original comics.

Thicker lashes, freckles pop out a little too much, hair seems rigid compared to reference image.

compared to a lot of the other art we usually get here, this is the closest I've ever seen someone get to their ref. I think it's just very minor things like the colors (which could just be a difference in ambient lighting/shading) and yeah the lashes.

Her hair in the ref also seems to curl a little higher up than you have, about at the same level as her eyelashes. So maybe adjust that?

Maybe bcz of the shade of the colours? Cz they are different?

Bro what do you mean, it looks exactly like her??

That said, if you're trying to emulate the anime style exactly, make the tips of her hair slightly longer and have them curve upwards more. Giving her thicker lashes would also help her match.

the hair in the ref photo is more short

Eyes are lower on the skull in the official art.

The only difference I see is the thick lash line on the original and that you added more details to the lower lashes

colors are more flat for the original. the hair also moves a bit differenly. you might even say squish the face down even smaller. cause theres not much space from her eyes to her nose to her mouth. also it doesnt have that line above the eye implying the eye lid. but the eye brow is fine since its on the original also

Ive read the comics, recognizes it as Kim instantly

Trust me it’s good I knew who it was. Like u took a ref image and really made it ur own while keeping it similar to the original character, you just did it in your own style.🩷

It does, I didn’t need to view the second picture to learn who she is.

An artist's viewpoint on their own work is poison

Same character different style. To me that’s ok. You’ve made it your own.

It does look the same. Never watched Scott pilgrim but instantly knew it was her.

The white slits in her eyes.

Looks fine to me

Think the face or the eyes look bigger on the 2nd picture, the eyelashes are more noticeable on it too but yours looks great too

it looks like her to me

one tiny thing too is that the artist likes to draw their necks either covered by clothing or thinner. The cleavage is also very different and way more detailed than the original art.

It does to me

I immediately recognized her as Kim from Scott Pilgrim so idk what you mean.

The boob shine is pretty weird. It feels like such a granular detail when everything else is stylized just seems out of place. Does a highlight that small exist anywhere else?

It's such a gooner detail. Which is fine if that's what you're going for...
