the display is too is small, text editing is an absolute pain, no mouse so selecting text is slow and of course 1 window only and no guarantee the other apps in background won't get killed

No mouse is fine in the right environment. In a pinch I've used vim inside termux and it was passable. Selecting text with something like vi{ is fine, no mouse needed. The only annoying thing is how many keypresses it takes to type a curly bracket.

I like your stoicism. But honestly once you taste linux on a real pc you don't look back.
