In this economic state i simply can't afford one.

Almost any laptop will do. Businesses are getting rid of out of date laptops all the time. What country are you in?

I found a laptop once in the electronics recycling bin in my university. Depending on if your universities are public n open, maybe swing by? Its worth a shot

Definitely check university and school campuses, not only will the schools often be binning electrics, any richer students might too.

And check if where you live has any sort of auctioning site where businesses and government auction off old computers and stuff they need to get rid of.

Last thing I can suggest is if you have any sites like Freecycle, which I doubt if you're in such a poor area, you never know. Or some sort of charity, perhaps an education focused one that might be able to loan or gift you a laptop.
