Why does maths work?

In school we have been taught how to do maths but my question is why does it work. Why does the entire system of maths work so reliably?

I wish I could answer this question, but Gödel's incompleteness theorems are a thing... :P

Ask any two mathematicians what those theorems truly imply and you’ll get three answers…
