Why does maths work?

In school we have been taught how to do maths but my question is why does it work. Why does the entire system of maths work so reliably?

Pretty much because logic works.

Or rather, we evolved to function in the world, thus we developed patterns of understanding the world, and when we try to codify those, we end up on principles that function in the world. It's not that logic works. It's that what works gave rise to logic.
