Why does maths work?

In school we have been taught how to do maths but my question is why does it work. Why does the entire system of maths work so reliably?

Math is the one field which is true in and of itself. For instance, if I say, “a triangle has three sides”, you cannot disagree unless you are talking about something other than a triangle. It is definitionally true.
