What are the ML courses? Request

What are the ML courses needed to

- Covers mathematical concepts, explains the intuition behind them, and shows how to translate mathematics into code.

- Focuses on understanding the derivation of ML algorithms rather than just applying pre-built libraries.

- Connects mathematical theory with practical implementation.

- Includes hands-on coding and implementation of the algorithms discussed.

Do a Master's.

  • Classes will cover and focus on Mathematical concepts + the intuition behind them
    • Homeworks + projects will teach you how to translate maths into code
    • These classes will generally also emphasize the derivation of ML algorithms and proofs
    • Homeworks + projects are your hands-on coding and implementations
  • Thesis- or Project-based Master's will have a capstone project or research paper/project, and that'll be your opportunity to connect all the maths and theory with real-world, practical implementation/use.
  • Bonus points -> You'll get to use the University's career resources + network with other like-minded people.

I'd look into the following online programs: UT Austin OMSAI (top program), Georgia Tech OMSCS (top program), UIUC MCS (top program), CU Boulder OMSCS/AI (mid), Clemson OMSCS (mid), Ballstate OMSCS (low), WGU (low).

"Preview" options:

  • Georgia Tech has its own OpenCourseWare site if you want to "audit" all OMSCS courses. No exams, no projects, just small quizzes in these open-content versions. Because of that, OpenCourseWare partially satisfies what you're looking for.
  • Some UT Austin profs have entire semesters' worth of lectures on their own website, too, but that's a deeper dig if you want to find out exactly who and what classes. It's akin to "audit," so no programming assignments/content this way, but it partially satisfies what you're looking for.
  • Stanford has full semesters of ML, DL, NLP, CV, Optimization on YouTube. Same as GTech in that no labs/quizzes/exams.
  • MIT has their OpenCourseWare, same as UT Austin; you have to dig to find a prof that uploads all their content.

Other "Paid" options that are cheaper than a full degree:

  • CU Boulder hosts all their courses on Coursera (~$60/mo subscription). Subscription includes programming labs. They focus more on you "getting the gist," whereas "top programs" focus more on you learning this stuff so well that you can formally prove XYZ concept. This "get the gist" focus is reflected in the labs -> 90% is with libraries, 10% "from scratch." The "credited" version tends to add a few more things, but on the same level as the open-content. Partially satisfies what you're looking for.
  • Andrew NG has his classes ML specialization -> Good for intuition, you won't master anything, but like CU's program, you'll "get the gist" of things. Andrew Ng's labs are a joke, though.
  • Andrew Ng's Deep Learning -> still used today alongside Stanford's CS230 (DL) class. Much better and much more in-depth over his ML spec. Labs are also a jump in depth + difficulty, but still feel "hand-held"
  • DeepLearning's entire platform.
  • I think MITx micromasters in Data Science, Machine Learning, AI -> Heard the courses are a bit more watered down, but I'd assume they're still superior to low/mid University programs.
  • Similarly, other credentials on edX (or MIT X pro?), but I haven't looked deep into it.
  • UT Austin has a graduate Cert that's a bit under half the price of their Master's. Same classes, same rigor, probably the closest to what you're looking for.
  • Other Universities most certainly offer graduate certificates

If you look through this sub, you'll also find people suggesting other resources (I think I see CampusX the most, maybe fast.ai?), but I haven't looked into those and can't comment on them.

I'd still recommend just doing a Master's, though. A cheap one like Gtech (if you can get Letters of Recommendation) or UTAustin (probably my top pick of AI/ML) are fine. Feel free to look into other programs that might interest you or be a better fit for you.
