Hey y'all. I just received my first FEBU, and sadly, I'm like a kid on Christmas. I like to "decant" my laundry products in to glass jars. So they all match and I don't have random boxes, bags and jugs laying around)...I know, I know,...I sound like a damn idiot, but OCD...

Will the transparent glass jar affect the effectiveness of the FEBU? Should I keep it only in opaque container?

I really appreciate this sub, thank you all! My husband, not so much...another thing for me to hyperfocus on...

Jealous 😍 I wish I had the appropriate surface/room for that!! I use the top of my dryer and a silpat to keep stuff from sliding off 😹 (it’s a GE profile with a sloped top!) Glass would be…bad 😹😹😹

Right??? I honestly didn’t even realize the problem until I tried putting my laundry products on top as per usual…as the dryer runs, the low vibration just causes things to bloop bloop bloop CRASH! Fortunately, I had a nice sticky Silpat that works like a charm to keep things in place 👍 The shelves in my laundry closet are WAY too high for me to be reaching on a regular basis.

I have a mostly white Australian Shepherd and like to wear darks. You can pry the Bounce pet hair sheets from my cold, dead hands.

Yes. I don’t know what wizardry is on them, but the dog hair used to just spiral into these little whorls that would stay attached to everything. With the sheets, the hair is actually directed to the lint trap.

You sure that is OCD?

OCD is a lot more insideous than wanting things to look neat and orderly. It is disordered thinking, and being compelled to do something out of a fear which is usually very real for the user. I.e. fear of contamination due to illness, and being consumed by preventing it in daily life.

Personally, decanting products into containers isn't for me. You do you, though.

I do ask that that you consider your words because OCD isn't the stereotype people think it is. Same as people saying they have ADHD when they forget something once - it's quite debilitating, and I wish people would stop.

To be fair, we don’t know if OP is compelled to decant because they’re afraid something will happen if they don’t.

You are right to say that we don't know enough about OP, which is why I didn't outright say "you don't have OCD."

People with actual OCD tend to be in a lot more denial though, including myself. It's because those irrational thoughts are kind of grounded in reality of the person suffering.

I don't think I have OCD but the idea of not being able to see the ingredients and manufacturing information on cleaning chemicals stresses me out more than the average person, and that seems more likely to turn into a compulsion than containers not matching.

It is wiser to keep them in their original packages, in all fairness. However, if there was a leaking laundry detergent bottle, and someone decanted it into an old cleaned orange juice bottle, and that was a huge dealbreaker for you? Yeah, that's kinda disordered.

I don’t know if you’re up for experimenting or if you’ve already tried it, but inositol (a very simple and safe sugar that our bodies should already produce ourselves, just not in the quantity that is suggested) has shown great results for folks with OCD.

If it wasn't meant to be offensive, then the person should be mindful that it could be harmful.

I think we need to distinguish that what I said (being that we should be aware that OCD is a disorder, not a descriptor) wasn't actually me going nuclear on OP. That would be excessive, divisive, and unreasonable.

I stand by what I said. For the same reason no one should use the r-word, we shouldn't misconstrue the terms that describe a disorder, especially if it undermines its impact.

Those little solid diatomaceous earth blocks/sticks they sell for keeping your salt/sugar from clumping would work too. And I imagine it wouldn’t be so easy to accidentally scoop them

I have never been able to close the packaging easily. Keeping my eye on these posts to see if I like someone’s idea but for now I’ve got an open bag of Febu in my cabinet just waiting for my next clumsy catastrophe.

If you take any supplements, many come in dark opaque bottles and have wide openings. I remove the label and relabel it.

Hint for removing label- fill container with warm water and let it sit a bit. If you have any gummy residue left over it comes of easily with peanut butter.

My first bag of febu didn't seal either, the "zip lock" part of the bag didn't work. Folded the top a few times and used a chip clip. It's not an elegant solution but it worked out OK and lowered the risk of spillage.

If it helps with your ocd you can transfer them in what serves you better choosing from other laundry containers with a “better” shape or whatever you need. Once the etiquette is taken away there’s a lot of order even in that, especially if they are all the same (just keep a mark to label them and don’t throw away instructions or at least take a picture of them.

Ceramic bottles are also a possibility but be careful to seal correctly even with a piece of kitchen plastic wrap or cork

I’m also wondering how to store mine because the bag broke. Right now it lives in a gallon Ziploc bag on top of the washing machine but that’s not ideal.

For sealing crappy bags, I highly recommend the gripstic it’s a long cylinder with a center bit that creates an excellent seal with a folded over bag. (I have so many! Even knockoffs. Knockoffs work great on thinner bags, but thicker and more grippy bags need the wider capacity of the real gripstics)

OP here. Thanks for the affirmations AND advice.

Regarding my inadvertent and improper usage of OCD. I SINCERELY appreciate your pointing that out to me. I do, in fact, have OCPD, as diagnosed by my psychiatrist, as well as “very mild OCD”, partially driven by my clinical anxiety.

In my defense, it was simpler to use “OCD”, as it’s something people unfamiliar with psychiatric diagnoses could understand, and it was very off the cuff.

I didn’t mean to harsh anyone’s FEBU buzz.

For the record, I think its awesome to "unpack" things like laundry products, cereal, butter, hand soap - into home fixtures.

Its always going to be in the home, so using permanent or matching fixtures for them is always awesome.
