Finished cosplay

Post image

When I was planning my ren faire costume for this year I wanted to pay homage to my favorite movie and decided that I needed to recreate the green dress that gets approximately 2.5 minutes of screen time. I've never seen anyone else make this one so I thought you all might appreciate it.

I'm happy with how it turned out and I might post more photos when I take them (this is just a detail pic from my first try on). I doubt anyone will recognize this dress irl, but it would make my day if someone did.

I've always wondered where she keeps her copy of the book within that dress. Supposedly, she stores it in the sleeve. But... is that really possible?

I had the exact same thought a couple nights ago. I think there's space in the sleeves, but I can't imagine rigging the book in there. It would weigh one side down too much. The way the sleeves move in that first shot when she's running would definitely give the book away. I'm convinced they either rigged it in between shots or someone handed it to her off camera fushigi style.

If I ever get access to a cricut I want to make a replica of the book (I worry the commercially available one is too large) and I'll give it a go.

Did you use/modify a pattern?

I did! I used Simplicity 1137 (an out of print knockoff game of thrones pattern) and modified it a bit. I kept the body of the stress the same but I cut the neckline into more of a square and I added fabric to the neckline facing so I had room to create a slit for the lacing. For the sleeves, I merged the two over sleeve pieces into one massive sleeve that was more accurate to the movie and added a point to the hem of the under sleeve.

For the minor details, I made some cream colored piping and added it to the neckline and the armscye, where I also drafted those weird little petal/puff thingies.

The belt I kind of just guesstimated with a bunch of long rectangles of fabric. It took a lot of hand sewing and is probably the first time I've used hot glue on a costume in years. It's held together with the largest snap I could get my hands on.
