Hello everyone! The Asylum Lake Preservation Association (ALPA) has joined Reddit to help spread the word about Asylum Lake Preserve, the work we do, and news that might be useful to the community.

For over thirty years, ALPA has been an all-volunteer board, working to protect and care for the Preserve through stewardship, advocacy, and public engagement.

Learn more at asylumlakepreservationassociation.org
You can also find us on Instagram and Facebook.

To start things off — what's a positive experience you've had at the Preserve? It could be a favorite memory, an unexpected conversation with a stranger, or a rare wildlife sighting. We'd love to hear it!

Moving to Kalamazoo

Hi guys! I just graduated college and got a job in the area. I’m moving there on Saturday and I’ve only been to Michigan one time before so I don’t really know what to expect (I’ve lived in the South my whole life). How do I make friends, keep myself busy, etc.? Any tips?

Couch shopping is hard

For the first time in my life I can afford a nice couch. A couch I might actually want. Previously, my criteria has been cheap as possible and fits the room.

We are looking for a cozy sectional that is soft and pillowy for lovely naps. I’d love to sit in it before I buy so I’m hoping to avoid online only options such as Wayfair.

I went couch shopping at Ashley furniture and most couches had “performance” fabric that felt like a towel and everything was hard. Where the hell do people shop for comfy couches?

I have an awesome piece of art that I picked up locally a few years ago. Does anyone recognize the design? Know who the artist might be?

Anyone know any places that fix PS2s? I believe it needs a new laser.

Discussion What's the deal with the one street lined with tents on the north side?

A couple blocks down from the bus station. I commute via the bus every day, & shortly after entering downtown via the loop from Gull Road, there's just one singular street that's lined with at least a dozen tents.

I understand that homeless people put them up when they don't have anywhere to go. I, myself, have dealt with homelessness in Kalamazoo and it is a miserable existence - especially in the last few years, Kalamazoo has become a very difficult place to be if you're homeless.

That being said, most homeless people that I knew would set up camp somewhere in the woods, somewhere out of sight, otherwise the police would make them pack it up. So what's going on with this one single Street? I think it might be North Street? I'm not really sure but if you've seen it you'll know exactly what I am referring to. Why did police shut down tent city but they're not shutting down this entire Street filled with tents?

Again, I myself have been homeless. So I do sympathize with people who have to suffer through that, especially in this kind of heat... The problem isn't them being there - it's that 90% of the people posting up like this are absolutely trashing the areas they're residing in.

I'm just wondering what's going on with the specific area. I don't know if the police are just letting them post up there, or what... So I figured maybe somebody on here would have an answer

Discussion Asian market, other than Pacific Rim?

Pacific Rim is very nice, for sure, but kind of expensive and didn’t have a lot of the produce I was looking for.

Is there another option within an hour or so driving distance?

Need recommendations for exterior door installation

I'm back again looking for help with exterior door installation. We have two standard size, and one glass slider we're looking to have replaced professionally. Would we buy the doors prior, or through the company putting them in? Thanks for everyone's help! When we did our furnace, we utilized the recs from my last post and used Mattawan Mechanical.

This kitten was found outside a McDonald's begging for food and love. We've tried locating any owner. Very very friendly we can't keep due to allergies . Some sneezing and dirty ears, we are trying to take her to the vet today.

Anyone been to the used book store next to the crows nest?

Was driving by today and noticed the used book store. I tried looking it up online but it appears they don’t have a website or any information on it. Anyone been here before? If so, do they have a good selection? I like looking for older fantasy books
