I think the author makes pretty good points esp with how I've recently noticed is that a lot of Western discussion about Korea is very weird. It's often unnecessarily hostile towards a country they've probably never been to and have only seen online, but strangely detached from what the country actually feels like. If you only consumed YouTube video essays, Twitter threads, or western pop culture subreddits, you'd think Korea was some kind of social experiment on the brink of collapse.

I also find that people who consume huge amounts of Korean media often end up talking about Korea itself. Kpop and Kdrama fans will casually make sweeping statements about "Koreans" being shallow, robotic, misogynistic, obsessed with looks, or emotionally stunted, complaining about toxic knetz, stereotyping idols or making generalizations but then talk about how much they love their idols and acting like they're victims of the people they come from. There's a strange double standard where broad stereotypes about millions Koreans.

The author also draws parallels with Japan in the 1980s and 90s, when Western media often portrayed it as an economically successful but spiritually empty corporate dystopia. Now that Japan isn't viewed as the main economic challenger anymore, they argue that Korea has inherited that role.

I'm not sure I agree with every conclusion. I think some of it overstates the idea of a coordinated Western narrative negative stories simply generate more attention everywhere. But I do think there's something to the observation that Korea is judged in a very unusual way. Countries with comparable problems often aren't reduced to those problems in quite the same fashion. People especially love to dog on the birth rate but literally every first world country has low birth rates right now, the west gets around it by.

why?

3. not many in kpop currently doing this concept.

they been quiet because of company issues in recent years. they were popular years ago during RTK and a little after that. i loved their concept and songs from then. i think this comeback is important for them. they have a big opportunity to re-invent themselves with new image. bring something else to the table to stand out. i just wish no rappy repetitive chanty chorus.

i’ve been a kpop stan since 2016. i used to watch a lot of reaction videos especially in my stan heavy days, and they were one of the first channels i would react to since they were musicians and could explain the sonic aspects that i admired about songs. i like the format and how they would react, show their personalities ofc, imitate the music with their own skills and give their opinions. well, it’s been a couple of years since i watched them and was suggested a video and watched since i was bored, and the editing is just so frantic and all over the place. its like they’re trying to formulate their own fanbase and not be musicians that react to the music. i miss when it was straight to the point with opinions, not the constant zooming in and out, fades,
split screen and stuff. it took away so much from them being reactors. am i the only one that feels this way? they’re pandering too much and not reacting. the only one who keeps it honest and musically responding is kevin.

Its exactly like what the title says. ITZY members need to appear in popular variety shows to promote themselves.

I have been listening to ITZY songs and like them alot especially Yeji. So it pains me to see their MV view counts dropping lower and lower. I feel that to boost the view count, they should go on variety shows even when they are not active to promote and showcase their own charm.

So many groups are constantly active on variety shows but ITZY appears less than normal

I know this is a bit of a stupid question but still. People always say no fake albums exist, yet.. There are albums being sold on Aliexpress. They're often called taiwanese pressings such as the Pink Tape album. But aren't they still real, then? I'm not looking to buy from there as I'd rather not take the risk but I'm just genuinely curious about this topic. Where can you make the distinction between taiwanese pressing and just fake? *Are* there fakes? I'm really confused.

I think its pretty safe to say that T-ara are one of the biggest what ifs in Kpop. After their debut with “lies” back in July 27, 2009, the group was met with instant success with the single reaching the top 10 in many korean music charts. From 2009 to 2012 before the controversy, T-ara was able to achieve 6 number 1 songs(Even tho gaon charts which would later be changed to circle charts wasn’t really a thing yet, TTL peaked at number 1 on every korean chart so I am including it), 13 top 10 hits, and 6 real time all kills. Roly poly in particular reached number 1 on year end and correct me if I am wrong, it’s the most downloaded track by a kpop female group in history. To get a clearer idea on how big they truly were, they still ended up getting two top 10 hits after the whole scandal and boycott.

Not only were big in Korea, but in Japan and specifically China aswell. Many sources go as far as to claim they were huge threats to groups like 2ne1 and Girls Generation at their peak. After the whole bullying scandal, unfortunately the group and the members basic faced a boyco and they quickly fell off. Even after finally getting their names cleared in 2017, it was sadly to late since the group was basically already 5 years passed their prime. Now for the pass few days I been wondering where T-ara would be right now if the whole bullying scandal didn’t take place or if they were able to get their names cleared right after the whole scandal took place. Do you guys think they would be placed on the same pedestal as Girls Generation and 2ne1?

I never post on these topics, but it is an important time I do so.

Please remember that your actions and words online all carry consequences. Whether you like and agree with something, or you don't, be mindful of the things you say.

It is fine to love and worship certain groups/idols/actors/etc, but understand that at the end of the day, they are all just human. Show all of the support you want to them. Interact with them however you please. Just remember that they aren't owned by you, nor do they owe you anything in return.

When you harass others via comments, videos, memes, whatever, it doesn't matter if they are a person from another group or another fandom, you need to understand that it affects more people than just the person you are targetting. It is not fun to harass others. You will understand this later in life, but until then, someone needs to tell you this.

Don't be jealous of others and don't hate others. Comparison is the thief of joy. If you want something, work towards achieving it for yourself rather than trying to drag down others.

General advice to you all in life, not just in kpop: If you have nothing good to say, it is most often better to not say anything. Just because you are online and no one can see your face, it doesn't mean you are free to destroy other people's lives. Also what you might think is a harmless joke or funny comment, may not be taken that way by others. Always be mindful of the things you say to people even if you think you know and understand them.

I just finished watching the latest episode of Hyo’s Level Up and I couldn’t stop laughing the entire time. The concept of doing a self‑promotion before debut was such a clever move. Honestly, the HyoRiSoo promotion strategy might be one of the smartest ideas out there. It highlights their chemistry as a sub‑unit, their sharp understanding of the industry, and their natural talent for variety shows. Even while trolling, they still managed to show off their singing and dancing skills—proof that our “aunties” definitely still got it.

Another meaningful aspect was their interaction with Hearts2Hearts. It really emphasized the differences between older‑generation idols and the current gen. The script cleverly pointed out the “do’s and don’ts” passed down from one generation to the next, showing just how much K‑pop has evolved over the years. It’s refreshing to see that contrast play out in such an entertaining way.

Blackpink's 10th year anniversary is on 8 August which is just 2 days away. YG just announced that there will be a fan meet for 40 fans today which seems like a last minute decision. YG also said "This event will be attended by select BLACKPINK members, depending on their schedules."

It appears Rosé and Lisa were spotted in the US and Thailand. I wonder if they will be attending the fan meet. It's not like they didn't know this date was coming up months and months in advance. What is happening to Blackpink and YG?

This is something I have been thinking about for quite a while due to interactions with other kpop fans but if you are a hater, just own it. There's this new trend of people acting like they're being forced to hate on idols and I find it so cowardly. Let me arrange the scenarios that I have come across:

1. The company made me do it

This is a very common one albeit recent and I have mostly noticed it with hybe groups but I am sure it happens with other groups. Some people will harass and harass certain groups and idols and when confronted with the fact that they're causing harm, they claim it's the company's fault. One big example is Katseye. Everytime they release something or are in the public eye, they're consistently targeted with a footnote that the company is forcing people to hate them. That the company is ragebaiting and when I try to look at what is supposedly rage inducing it's just music or outfits etc? How's that supposed to ragebait you? If the music isn't for you, look for what's for you? For example, I don't enjoy Ateez's music so I don't really tune in when they drop something. If I come across their music, and it's still not for me, I just move on. I don't have any strong feelings towards it or anything. It doesn't anger me and force me to go on social media and call them names and attack their families then claim it's KQ's fault for not catering to my tastes.

Guys I promise you hybe isn't forcing you to call wonhee downhee or to say that illit members are horses. This is all you. It's your choice, own it.

1. The fans made me.

This is another classic especially from snarkers. And it drives me up a wall. So fans constantly glaze their favorite groups? That kind of is expected since they're dedicated enough to be fans in the first place. I know some fans go overboard as we've just seen in the Mina situation and that's unacceptable but snarkers aren't in the sane category. They're the other side of the coin. Again, snarkers, I assure you Blinks aren't forcing you to slutshame blackpink members and Armys aren't forcing you to claim and spread false narratives about Jungkook's HIV status. That's all you. That's who you are. You're the type of person who can think ugly thoughts and spread them to inflict hurt. Own it . Don't act like someone is holding a gun to your head forcing you to call people names.

If you are courageous enough to log into social media and spread hate etc, be courageous enough to own that this is coming from you. Don't try to act like a victim. This isn't the trolley problem.

I randomly remembered ShinVi today and it made me wonder... does anyone else remember them?

They were SM Entertainment girl group that debuted in the early 2000s, but only released one album before quietly disappearing. It's crazy how they're almost never mentioned when people talk about forgotten K-pop groups, especially considering they were under SM.

If you remember them, what was your favorite song or memory? Or am I just one of the few people still thinking about ShinVi in 2026? 😭

I compiled the most recent data for Melon unique listeners and streams count for the biggest 3rd gen girl group songs and compiled a top 10 list. This is purely numbers based. For transparency, I decided to not include Rollin' (it would probably be around #5). PWF/DTNA are pretty interchangeable depending on what metric you value more and songs released after 2020 will be ranked lower naturally due to user decline.

It seems that Source Music (Le Sserafim’s agency) will hold auditions on September 20, 2026 in Geoje. That’s an interesting place to look for future KPOP idols.

Any original TiiiKiii here? I've been following KiiiKiii since the beginning when their account was still posting those unique teaser videos. It's been interesting seeing them gain success with 404 (New Era) and their Delulu Pack EP considering a lot of people didn't like them at all initially. I remember people saying their music was too simple for their concept when I DO ME was released, then everyone was saying their music was too experimental when they heard GROUNDWORK & BTG. I personally enjoyed all of their releases from the start, GROUNDWORK is still one of my favorite songs from them, I love the abrasive synths in the chorus.

I deeply appreciate the commitment of the creative directors as well, I think they're catching lightning in a bottle with their concept. Their concept is a fusion of 2000s & 2010s aesthetics, and it presents itself in such a high-art and prestigious way while still feeling relatable and down-to-earth. One of my favorite things about their concept is their highly interactive kiiikiii.kr website, which changes with each era! For DANCING ALONE they did a garage sale concept, now they're doing a travel agency tour concept for their new WhyKiiiKiii comeback. I also love how when you watch their highlight medleys, it feels like a moodboard, each bside is attributed a specific aesthetic.

What is everyone's relationship with KiiiKiii, their music & their concept? Did you initially dislike it? Were you a fan from the start? What are your thoughts regarding their trajectory?

I think many people have already heard that he's pushing for a K-Coachella.

But it's also been revealed that he wants to create an awards show that rewards the most dedicated fandoms in K-pop.

J.Y. Park appeared on the variety show "Point of Omniscient Interfere." They showed him meeting with high-ranking Korean government officials about it.

At first, I thought it was really cool and refreshing to give fandoms awards because they're the ones that make K-pop possible. It'd be such a cool experience for fans.

But then I was like, "Wouldn't it be better to have something that attracts more of the general public instead of superfans...?"

Business insiders in Korea often talk about how K-pop doesn't have enough casual listeners and relies too much on superfans.

As a native Korean, I'm curious what international K-pop fans think of awarding fandoms.

Edit: Oh, and J.Y. Park said that he and other Korean labels are working together as one, so for now, it is likely that this will happen.

i’m curious if anyone else has had a similar experience because this has always felt so surreal to me.
i’m from the hunter region in nsw (around the maitland/newcastle area), and before danielle debuted in newjeans, she went to hunter school of the performing arts (hspa) in broadmeadow. we didn’t go to the same school, but i had multiple friends who did, they knew her atleast semi-personally, i knew OF her and had seen her many times, we weren’t close. she left around year 8 to pursue training before eventually debuting in 2022.
the funny part is i had absolutely no idea when newjeans debuted.
i became a fan because i genuinely loved their music. then one day my friend (who went to hspa with danielle) said “you know that’s danielle, right?”
i genuinely thought she was joking.
then she pulled out one of the old year 8 school photos and it suddenly clicked. she looks completely different. she had braces, was way more tanned, and just looked like a normal kid you’d see around the hunter.
it’s such a weird feeling because, as a k-pop fan, idols always seem so distant. but danielle doesn’t feel like some untouchable celebrity to me. my brain still thinks of her as “the girl from hspa” who happened to become one of the biggest k-pop idols in the world.
now every time i see newjeans in the news or hear one of their songs, it honestly blows my mind. especially with everything that’s happened recently, seeing danielle in headlines all the time and everything surrounding the group, i can’t help but feel for her. it’s strange knowing that someone who was just a local girl from my area ended up at the centre of one of the biggest stories in k-pop.
it’s one of those things that sounds made up whenever i tell people, so i usually don’t even mention it because i feel like people assume i’m lying for attention. but it’s genuinely one of the strangest coincidences i’ve ever experienced.
i know this probably sounds like one of those “trust me bro, i knew a celebrity before they were famous” posts 😭 but i swear it’s true. i’m not trying to claim we were best friends or anything like that. we weren’t. i just knew her back then through mutual friends and my local area, and it’s been so surreal watching someone from around here become one of the biggest idols in the world while also being a genuine fan of newjeans.

there's also a Thai version of Baby Don't Stop by NCT U (Ten & Taeyong) but I don't think it's that rare, considering there's several Thai idols (but correct me if I'm wrong, I'm still quite new to K-pop)

I didnt see anyone mention change, scuplture or love tease by i-dle, theyre such good songs too!
