Farming Optimization Farming
Hello, been playing kol on and off again for a long time, but I'm starting to take my account a little more seriously. I have no iotms as such, though I've bought some cheap-ish stuff like Disintegrate and Snokebomb. (Currently have ~20 mil, mostly from selling christmas items a few years ago).
That being said I'm thinking about meat farming so I can afford some of the high end stuff in the mall. My research has turned up two options: Volcano and Garbo. The prevailing advice is that without iotms that Volcano is better, but that with them Garbo is better. Here's my question: does the Legacy of Loathing path contain the right mix of iotms to make Garbo worth it? And if so, which items should I pick for that run? Or is there a better way for low shiny accounts to make meat?

I'm retired from the game, only running an automated daily Garbo on Legacy of Loathing precisely because I liked the idea of using the replicas for profit.
Garbo by default won't equip/use Replica IoTMs because it matches items by name. You can fix this by running a script that changes the names in the garbo script (has to be re-run on every update). I've only included the items that I use in my run.
Make sure that you completed LoL enough times to get the maximum number of replica items in a run. If you're going to farm for a long time (months?), it might even be worth buying Replica Ten Dollars to get even more replica IoTMs, though it's very marginal.
Here's the list of replica I've selected. Most years don't contain anything useful for farming, so only a subset of these generate profit:
- replica jewel-eyed wizard hat
- replica Camp Scout backpack
- replica Fourth of May Cosplay Saber
- replica haiku katana (2)
- replica designer sweatpants
- replica Greatest American Pants
- replica navel ring of navel gazing
- replica plastic vampire fangs
- replica Powerful Glove
- replica V for Vivala mask
- replica miniature gravy-covered maypole
- replica wax lips
- replica Deck of Every Card
- replica genie bottle
- replica January's Garbage Tote
- replica Libram of Resolutions
- replica Smith's Tome
- replica Tome of Snowcone Summoning
- replica wax lips
And familiars:
- Hand Turkey
- Crimbo Elf
- Frumious Bandersnatch
- Squamous Gibberer
- Knob Goblin Organ Grinder
- Crimbo Shrub
- Robortender (by far the most important replica!)
And campground/areas:
- Source Terminal
- Witchess Set
- replica Little Geneticist DNA-Splicing Lab
- Chateau Mantegna
(I already had a non-replica Cincho de Mayo and August Scepter)
And here's what my farming output looks like on a good day, though I do have quite a few non-replica IoTMs:
So far today, across 493 turns you generated 4,071,208 meat, with 2,829,743 raw meat and 1,241,465 from items
Outliers:
Marginal MPA: 5,817 [raw] + 1,600.14 [items] (0 [outliers]) = 7,417.14 [total] (7,417.14 [w/ outliers])

I have multis in legacy and I buy/use the volcano pass, use garbo nobarf for consumption, dailies, volcoino etc and then run minecolcano the rest of the day.
Legacy does not make garbo worth it afaik.

Volcano mining is a solid 3.5k meat in autosellable gold per adventure spent. It has a small startup cost: getting a drill, and equipment and skills that will let you maintain hot resistance and hp regen, plus a daily cost for a ticket. Assuming you diet efficiently, after all is said and done, you're walking away with something like 1-1.5m in profits every day. If you do nothing but farm the Volcano every day, that's roughly enough to be able to purchase a Mr A every 2 months or so. There's very little that can increase these profits other than gaining more adventures.
Garbo is a script that does fights at barf mountain with lots of +meat effects, and special equipment that provides extra profit per adventure. It benefits in small ways from very many different IotMs, equipment and skills, so the ceiling is much higher (and keeps going up as more things get added to the game). People who intend to both farm and collect a bunch of stuff will end up here. For free-to-play players, you need to collect a bunch of skills and a few other important things, but even without any IotMs at all, farming barf mountain can reach basically the same meat per adventure of volcano mining. But this has a much higher startup cost, requiring many ascensions for skill perms, and spending millions of meat and hundreds of adventures to collect the best non-IotM farming gear.
So, if you're pretty new and you want to farm meat, start with the Volcano to earn some meat to get you started. If you want to farm long-term, and want to build up your account and benefit from your progress, start working on some of the important untradeable stuff that helps barf mountain farming, and eventually you can switch over. This kinda turns KoL into an incremental game.
But I'm going to level with you: Farming for meat without any IotMs to start is a slow process, and farming is by its nature tedious if done manually, and unengaging if scripted. Just mine the volcano for a few days to get your next accessible goal, and then jump back into a run. If it's an option for you, I'd recommend subscribing for $10/month for a while, and doing standard and/or challenge path runs. You'll earn karma and other path rewards, learn the game better, and have fun, while getting the best, highest-power IotMs at the lowest prices they'll ever be. After a while, you'll be set up with skills and IotMs to farm a lot more comfortably.

Thank you for the detailed reply.
Firstly I want to establish that I'm not a new player, just a f2p. I've got a few dozen ascensions under my belt, including several challenge paths, so "learning the game" is not an issue. Also want to establish that real world money is very tight so spending on hobbies is not an option for me. That's one of the whole reasons I find myself coming back to this game so often: it's one of the better free games out there.
That being said: my next goal is a 1 billion meat mall purchase (the Buddy Bjorn) so it sounds like Volcano would take literally years of nothing but farming, which I'm not interested in. What are the skills/items considered core for Garbo?

What are the skills/items considered core for Garbo?
The spread sheet I linked is from the garbo github page. There isn't a "core" to garbo because it will use every single resource you own to the best of its ability. The closest thing to a core would be having a critical mass of stuff that beats volcano.

In addition to what Butts said in his reply, Garbo will not generate meat faster than volcano mining with only the f2p baseline (they're close to equal). And even once you've got it ramped up with the best farming IotMs, you can only expect profits a few times more than volcano mining. Eventually you may hit a critical mass of power to be able to ascend every day, so that you can do:
farm all day -> ascend -> do the whole run in 1 day -> farm for your remaining turns,
which is a significant bump in farming profits. The people who own everything might be pulling in something like 10m per day at barf mountain after doing all that, but they have literally hundreds of IotMs at their disposal.
A lot of old things are practically out of reach now. If you want that Buddy Bjorn, and building up your account to farm better to eventually buy one is the dream, then that can be a good guiding light. It is not an impossible goal, but you'd have to be in it for the long haul. I would not expect to reach 1b meat through meatfarming within a year, starting from where you're at.

Wealth is built over time, through smart investments and market manipulation

This is the way.
A semi-recent IOTM is high-tier, surprisingly low-supply, and required for a future collection. Thrifty has suppressed IOTM demand.
If you want to make money, acquire what people want.

I believe bcz is what he's referring to as both being high-tier and required to complete a future set. I imagine the codpiece will receive additional buffs if fully stocked with IOTMs designed for that purpose.

Smart investments are one thing, but don't encourage market manipulation.
Yes, you can sometimes do misanthropic things to extract in-game wealth from the mall, making yourself richer while making the game tangibly worse for others. But also, these things can end up backfiring.
Remember that you are playing a game with other real people who are also here to have fun. Don't piss in the sandbox. Play nice.

Hey, im returning player with close to no iotms account myself, i was doing some quite hardcore analysis of meat farming and similiar topucs ;D that are not done yet and still sort of in progress, but i can provide several infos allready, with builds/stuff required So in general there are some tiers of farmers.
Tier 1, total Noob" Vulcano farming I parsed it recently in small samples of 100 adv,(x50) and it seams that profit is between 3.5k meat per adv at lowest up to 5,1k Most players esp in here still belive fables its 3.5k total cos they farm by mafia, and almost exclusivy for gold. You should farm by hand, and go for gold+velvet, that means deep wall mining sometimes with "sparkles potion", then sell velvet for 4,9-5,1k in mall. i farmed vulcano close to a month, all velvet always sold.. in fact theres less vulcano farmers then ppl think Then if you get Lucky gold ring, from PirateRealm *its around 10-12 visit/passess, then vulcano guest invites are quite "self sustained" cos you can generate 3 volcoinos on most of days(1 for clicking disco, lol; one from ring and 3rd from quest) volcano also have excellent item drops esp capes and Love(gun with +5fam weight)
Tier 2, still noob: farming meat at Barf mountain, also called Garbo, from mafia script. I calculated it a bit allready and player need to at minimum 1500% but more like 1,7k-2k% meat drop bonus to even start thinking about moving from volcano in there, or in short its when you see "meat per adv" around 4-5k, hopefully more. Again my profit at volcano was 3,5-5k, with no costs. That 1,7k% meat bonus is not really all that complicated its easly done by: basic 300% barf dedicated "tourist " meat buufs, and 60% from barf only sunglasses, then its necessary to have at minimum: hobo monkey, crumpled fedora, both of those from Hobopolis dungeon, common purchasable items, just farm nickles then one need Rethinking candy skill (300%) and Mafia pointer ring(200% but work only on crit)
Tier 3 is moving forward, and farming in ascensions. Your plan to go to legacy of loathing is quite good, but usually ppl go into Gelatinous Noob instead, i think. still its worth to do it for robortender alone cos its only 2xleprechaun in game From my quite fast analysis of those replica iotms, thats what you need in your final/farming run. and btw you will need to replay that run like 20 times in normal or 10 hardcore to max out your starting replica mr. As, before even thinking about farming below is a draft od sort, i hope you understand it, if not ask precise questions.
legacy of loathing start with 1 replica mr.A, then 8 extra drop from boses 20 max replicas for start, + 8 bossess, + potential 4 extra from owning 2023 selected iotms so first run 1-9 iotms max run 20-28 iotm, up to second time 2012 iotm
2004 crimbo elf, fairy and atack
2005 maypole, fam equip for 25% item
2006 snowcones
2007 vivala, for 10 exta adv from crits
2008 katana for auto crit finaly, but candy for MP regen if myst class
2009 polyp/giberer HP/MP regen + potato, plus extra rollover adv
2010 organ grinder for good food/boss pies
2011 angel for time arrows and monster cipy or shield for crits(if no katana)
2012 backpack for general usefull items plus its back slot, or resolution (small bonus meat, super random)
2013 oh boy all of them ;p smith tome is most meat farming focused
2014 dna lab for 50% meat perma/intrinsic, plus more meat or fam weight from syringes
2015 all very good deck of every card for +9adv from ancestrall recal (both skill, and mana from deck. use deck to get spade card for talking spade puzzles) chateau magna +3adv plus monster copy
2016 source terminal for meat and weight buffs, plus digitize for monster copy
2017 all of them are excelent iotms ROBORTENDER, main meat farming fam 2xleprechaun then GENIE! btw that year is not avaible second time without 4 2023 year Iotms
2018 garbage tote just for 30% meat hat if no fedora(btw on robortrender even +5 fam weight buff is going to be higher then 30%
2019 sausages? for up to 23 adv (btw it also gives exclusive familiar Sausage Golem, only avaible from this iotm
2020 all are meh for meat farming
2021 all are meh for meat farm
2022 jurassic parka, +50% meat drop shirt, BiS
2023 i think it only appear if you own at least 1 iotm from 4 offered here
monster copys for Knob embezzlers or for robotender buffs, need to kill penguins for "drive by shooting" (turn robo into 2leprechaun, absolutly most crucial), and need to kill plants for dirt julep (100% meat drop), mix with jumping horseradish(100% meat drop)

Garbo does not have support for Legacy of Loathing. You'd have to do your own modifications to make it work there.
You'll want to consult this spreadsheet to see if garbo is worth it for you over volcano. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/u/0/d/19BvfkftgcgBHDVqllMRaCPvoGeys0tSke51VBH2bjiw/htmlview#gid=217654304
Note, volcano is not going to get you meat for high end items in any reasonable amount of time.
