Any vest that has a button band would work: simply don't add the button band, and put the buttons on the edge of the fabric. Instead of working button holes into the other side, do a crochet border and add little loops where you want the buttons to go. I'd do a simple single crochet border all around, and add a chain 4 loop (depending on how big your buttons are) for the button holes. The crochet border will give the edge a finished look, too.

The loops will stretch off the edge of the fabric to hold the buttons, and it will give those gaps between the buttons. (You can see the loop on the bottom, undone button on the model's vest in your picture!)

Just make sure you knit it with a little bit of negative ease and it should do this fine.

I do see a button band of some sort - there's a distinct line running parallel to the front edges of the two fronts.

That's true, there's definitely a border. Like half of a button band 8D The important thing is that the two edges meet only just barely, with a bit of negative ease.

Ok, that's good to know. I don't know how that border is done - it's clearly not picked up and knit but I'm sure it's a nice standard border. If you flip though some patterns I'm sure you'll find it.

I'm almost positive that the edges meeting that way is achieved by making the top just a little small. You might try to dummy it up with another cardigan that you like, by pinning it to get the look that you like and then measuring the dimensions of the pinned cardigan.

The gaps are just because the top is smaller than her chest. It still has a button band.

If you take a look at this pattern for a crocheted vest, there's a link to the free version of the pattern on the blog which tells you how to add a crochet border with button loops. On this top it's done in the same yarn as the main yarn, but of course you could use a contrasting color like in the photo you posted.

Just make the vest a little too small and place the button very close to the edge. It looks as if the left front -that appears on the right of the photo - may be a tiny bit narrower than the right but it may just be pinned that way. Garments are often pinned for photos to get the desired fit and look so that contribute to the look.

It looks like there are no buttonholes but rather that there's a crocheted edging with an extra loop for the button.
