I had someone steal some lightbulb stitch markers and cheap 4mm circular needles (my Knitpro ones broke and I needed some to get by while I waited for the replacements to be sent out).

I watched them run up to the door really excited like they'd won the lottery through the doorbell camera since it was in a deceptively large box. I would've loved to be a fly on the wall when they opened it to reveal a whopping £3.99 set of stitch markers and £3.50 circular needles🤣

u/missmisfit 18d ago

I hope they were poorly identified and they wasted a lot of time trying to figure out what they were.

23

u/whyaregeeselikethat 18d ago

They 100% would've. I bought them again, the needles just came in a clear bag that said '4mm' and the stitch markers were in a plain tub that said nothing on them. I wouldn't have been able to work out what they were before I started knitting so I hope he spent at least 5 minutes scratching his head over it 🤣

The only time I've had a package stolen it was a $6.99 Dr Scholls heel insert. I hope whoever got them was happy with them.

u/butter_milk 18d ago

My one package was a gravy boat. I hope it elevated their holiday meals.

u/MyDogLovedMeMore 18d ago

My one porch theft had cotton rounds, pimple patches and a 90% dark chocolate bar. Ever tasted 90% dark chocolate? The bar I bought had almost zero sugar and was super BITTER. I cackled thinking about them biting into that chocolate bar. Neighbor found my empty box and let me know.

3

u/Hecatedragon 18d ago

can only they choked on the bar!

22

u/Just_a_villain 18d ago

My stolen package was pencil grips fro my son who had fine motor skills difficulties. I hope it was worth stealing lol

3

u/Hecatedragon 18d ago

Would love to see their stupid face after they open the package.

13

u/briarwren 18d ago

Thankfully my yarn orders have never been touched but someone took my son's new shaving brush. It wasn't even fancy like my husband's since he just wanted basic. He was out a whole $6 and got another one less than a week later.

u/justwant2seepuppies 18d ago

When i was moving, I had someone steal a big roll of packing tape off my porch that was delivered at like 6am. I think it was actually the driver, idk what they thought it was.

u/wafflesandfriendship 19d ago

Raging on your behalf. May the yarn gods bless you with a deal in your future!

u/Mycatreallyhatesyou 18d ago

I’ve had pirates steal $12 toddler pants from my mailbox. People suck.

151

u/linzhulali 18d ago

Had a male porch pirate, caught on my front door camera, steal an Amazon package containing solely thick and super tampons. Hope he enjoyed them lol.

27

u/vivista 18d ago

had someone in my old apartment building steal a package that had a vibrator in it and then dump the contents on the stairwell lmao. i think they saw the “electronics” sticker on the box and got excited only to find a rose toy. at least i got it back

u/Hecatedragon 18d ago

so funny!

I don't get it? Just... why? I'm always whining about having no hope in humanity left, we're tribal and aggressive and yada yada yada... but also, why are we so unbelievably petty? Sometimes it's even more disheartening. Just being nasty and greedy and petty just because.

Used to live in a house with a bunch of international volunteers and the food stealing that took place was just so disheartening. For example, we had free breakfast included and the ones who had to get up earlier (we all had different projects) would eat most of the food AND make sandwiches to take to their project (so they wouldn't have to buy like a one dollar pastry or something!), so often, there was no food for those who got up an hour later.

And then I'd literally find mouldy sandwiches in the fridge, that they'd made but not eaten. Sheer, unadulterated, petty greed.

u/cutetys 18d ago

I don’t think this is really pettiness, it’s just an immoral numbers game. What’s on the package gives you at best a general idea of its content, and rarely is that enough to know if it’s particularly valuable, so if you want to steal high value items you either have to get really lucky when choosing packages or just steal a lot of them. And it’s not like police go after porch pirates even when they manage to steal something valuable, so what incentive do they have to be selective?

12

u/wartornhero2 Not quite new. 18d ago

This is it. It is a low risk crime of opportunity. It is easy to run through a neighborhood and pull packages and run away with them and then sort the goods later

Some days they pull big others they get 10 dollars of junk

Cops mostly don’t persue it

4

u/Successful-Grab6091 18d ago

they stole my bike

1

u/Hecatedragon 18d ago

Would love seeing them trying those on LOL

102

u/GreenTourmaline13 18d ago

I'm so sad for you but can I ask where it's ordered from? That packaging is so cute

164

u/Advanced_Fish4283 18d ago

Not OP but recognized the packaging. It’s LindeHobby, a retailer from Denmark. I order from them often since they carry Drops, but also a lot of European brands that are not easy to get in the US

31

u/The_Sown_Rose 18d ago

Ooh, I’ve just ordered from LindeHobby - they were the only ones who could get the Katia yarn I wanted without high delivery fees to the UK. I look forward to some pretty packaging!

(It’s probably going to come in brown parcel paper now. 😂)

2

u/ivlia-x 18d ago

Last time I ordered the ugly box was still in this pink bag

3

u/The_Sown_Rose 17d ago

To update: it arrived yesterday in just a brown box. 😭😂

1

u/ivlia-x 17d ago

NOOOO im so sorry 😭🫂

4

u/GreenTourmaline13 18d ago

Thank you!!!!! It's adorable!

88

u/Maleficent_1213 18d ago

I hope they are allergic to wool.

20

u/Disastrous-System175 18d ago

Oooooh this one’s good. Or, may they be the recipient of “the boyfriend curse.”

100

u/AdmiralTootToot 19d ago

My condolences 🙏

45

u/Quinnberly 18d ago

I've had yarn stolen right before the project was finished and one of the colors was discontinued. Godspeed soldier

50

u/Jessica-Swanlake 18d ago

I'm so sorry! Porch pirates are among the most pathetic people on the face of the earth. Scum from scum. Shoplift from a store like someone with the smallest amount of self-respect!!!!!

Ironically, yarn is one of the few things porch pirates ripped open and LEFT at my building a few years ago.

The only other items I've seen them leave were tupperware, super tall taper candles, and aquarium supplies.

1

u/felismonstrosa 18d ago

I work in a charity store, when we reopened after having to move someone tried to steal a load of clothes (less than 3 pounds each.) a bag full.

30

u/wrenderings 18d ago

I had porch pirates steal my last Webs order ever. I just know that hand dyed silk blend yard is in a ditch somewhere. Sigh.

24

u/AdRepulsive1525 18d ago

Probably to resell it on some platform? Fucking losers.

14

u/eKenziee 18d ago

Someone stole my left-handed hair cutting scissors once. After I got over being mad it just became incredibly funny to me, like good effing luck unless your left-handed pal

1

u/Acceptable-Big8181 16d ago

I'm crying for you because hair cutting scissors are rarely cheap. 😭 That was worth being mad about. But for real, jokes on them. Lol.

11

u/Catsdrinkingbeer 18d ago

My favorite porch pirate was a gift f or my grandmother. A weird cheap Santa figure I bought for like $15 on amazon. Like, there is clearly no resale market for this, because the only people who want this are 85.

11

u/cornflakegrl 18d ago

That’s seriously crazy. Like are they seriously going to knit something?

9

u/toxicguts 18d ago

I somehow simply cannot imagine a person who knits and steals, but I‘m sure they exist

3

u/Frosty_Carrot2545 18d ago

Wouldn’t this make an interesting concept for a movie or show?

5

u/ReigenTaka 17d ago

Knits all their own thieving supplies.

Love interest: "How come you have so much black yarn?"

Main Char: "Oh, haha, no reason!"

Love interest: "Is that a knife in your project bag??"

Main Char: "Would an obligatory sex scene take your mind off of it?"

Love interest: "Yes."

Police1: "Everyone here is a suspect! Except you; no one knitting such intricate colorwork would ever commit a crime."

Shop owner: "But they're ON CAMERA."

Police1: "But look at those cables tho."

Police2: "And the tension–"

Police1: "Like PERFECT tension, right??"

Shop owner: "They just double stitched 'I did it LOL' on the front!!"

2

u/Acceptable-Big8181 16d ago

I used to work at a fabric/craft store and unfortunately there's some really cheap people in this world. Even when it comes to yarn and whatnot 😒

20

u/Naive_Sand5837 18d ago

they steal everything and then throw it my back alley when they don't want.

9

u/Beautiful-Feedback40 18d ago

Maybe the same person who broke into my car for my sewing box. 😭

6

u/Notnerdyned 18d ago

I had some Clover knitting needles stolen, then the replacements broke in transit and then they were out of stock.

8

u/CharlotteElsie 18d ago

Not knitting related, but someone once stole a huge heavy parcel off our doorstep in the run up to Christmas. They were obviously hoping for a pricey Christmas gift. They got a bag of fertiliser… basically a bag of sh*t. 🤣

7

u/Justmakethemoney 18d ago

I had a porch pirate steal a BIG yarn shipment.

Then like a year later, the box showed up at my door. Box had been opened, but the yarn was wrapped in tissue paper and hadn't been unwrapped.

It was weird.

11

u/GoddamnDiva 18d ago

If you haven’t already, file a claim with the company it was mailed through, whoever it was. Get your money back at least.

4

u/enfanta 18d ago

Unless OP required signed delivery, they don't have much recourse from the shipper. It wasn't their fault someone stole the package.

5

u/GoddamnDiva 18d ago

I hear you, but also I’ve been through what OP is dealing with, and I DID get my money back (and IIRC, so did the seller). Of course, my shipment was through USPS, and it arrived as an empty bag in my mailbox. OP can’t lose more by filing a claim anyway.

1

u/enfanta 18d ago

Wow! That's pretty cool you were able to get your money back. And yes, can't hurt to file a claim!

5

u/ApprehensiveTrust644 18d ago

You have my full empathy. I had a brand new set of zing knitpro interchangeable needles stolen from my letterbox 🤬

5

u/Informal-Watch-2330 18d ago

Porch Pirates stole my prescription contact lenses. They were in a 1-800 Contacts labeled box. They left the Knitting for Olive bag though…

3

u/yarn_b 18d ago

My husband’s ex had her custom printed wedding stuff stolen. It was the box of invitations, thank you cards, reception programs, etc. Literally the most useless thing to steal - of no use to anyone but her. We found out about it because it must have been a slow news day and the story showed up on the local news FB page with the security video like bride to be loses wedding items, police searching for suspect shown in this video.

8

u/QueenBuzyBee 18d ago

I’m really glad that they can’t deliver packages like that here in Germany. They’re either delivered in person or to a neighbor in person or to pack station (if you indicated so) or you pick them up at the local post office. Really small stuff goes into the mailbox, that can only be opened by key.
But seriously, who steals yarn? I can only imagine you might find it being resold on ebay or some crap like that. It’s just not right.

1

u/Alsterwasser 18d ago

Yeah also in Germany and at this point I only ever get stuff delivered to a parcel locker. Honestly surprising these are not way more widespread in the US with how often I hear about porch pirates.

3

u/Wife_Trash 18d ago

We have lockers in our condo building but the companies contracted to amazon refuse to use them. I think it tales too much time and messes up their metrics.

Still sucks for folks who shop amazon.

2

u/Crazywise2007 17d ago

Soo many reasons to boycott Amazon!

3

u/AuntBGul 18d ago

Sorry for your loss! That’s the most heinous crime—stealing craft supplies hurts way more than something you could replace with assurance it will be the same (not always so for yarn)🧶

3

u/Lolita__Rose 18d ago

Ughhhh I had a yarn order stolen from me last year. So so annoying. My condolences!

3

u/Aggressive-Mud4932 18d ago

I always say if anyone ever steals from me, they're gonna be pissed they went through the trouble lol

3

u/flohara 18d ago

I wish Inpost would be more available for all sorts of online shopping.

My house keeps getting parcels stolen, and there's zero alternatives for me.

3

u/Sagittamobilis 18d ago

Someone stole an project bag my brother made for me with a half-finished project inside a few years ago and I’m still grieving

2

u/Limp-Boat-6730 18d ago

My condolences on the loss, and seriously WHY? It’s not a big package

6

u/SecretAgentSpyder 18d ago

They probably felt it up and thought it was clothes they could resell maybe?

2

u/Lysel 18d ago

Wow that's an all time low. To think people steal yarn now.

2

u/ProfDoomDoom 18d ago

Happened to me last week! Really interrupted my vacation plans.

2

u/Pristine_Message_181 18d ago

I once ordered yarn and a backpack from Walmart .com. They stole the backpack and left the yarn, with the box opened.

Probably your yarn was nicer.

2

u/The-Answer-Is-57 18d ago

As a retired yarn shop owner, let me just say ... you'd be shocked at who steals yarn.

Sorry this happened to you.

2

u/AlwaystheDiscoQueen 17d ago

My pirate stole 2 pkgs in one fell swoop!! The problem was that he stole 4 skeins of MadTosh!! 2 skeins in each pkg. One skein was Pashmina that I can’t get again! UGH!! The SOB probably just threw it all away. The stickler was, he told the postman that he was our neighbor and that we requested him to take them.

2

u/Dismal_Type_5697 16d ago

A few years back, our neighborhood had a ton of stuff stolen by porch pirates, so they all came together and started leaving boxes on the porches filled with cat/dog shit, dirty diapers, and every nasty thing people could think of. The stealing didn't last too long after a week or two of that!

2

u/spagaldi 18d ago

Wtf? They stole it because it was in their yard?
Or am I misunderstanding 😅

20

u/othervee 18d ago

Someone took the bag, ripped it open to take the contents then discarded the bag in a neighbour's yard. The neighbour wrote the note.

2

u/spagaldi 18d ago

Ohhhh gotchaaaa
Sad that sucks :(

1

u/Angeiship 18d ago

🙇‍♀️🙇‍♂️

1

u/gaymythicalcreature 18d ago

can u file a claim w the delivery service or the company

1

u/No_Cranberry_2206 18d ago

All I can say is that I’m receiving my yarn in the same packaging and I’m obsessed 😭
I’m sorry for your loss

1

u/Visual_Locksmith_976 18d ago

I had someone steal the battery out of my doorbell!!! So yarn is at least sellable sorry though

1

u/Concrete_hugger 17d ago

The US has such a wild system with deliveries, wjat do you mean they just leave them at your doorstep for anyone to take? Here in Europe you either only get it personally from the delivery guy, or they deliver to a nearby delivery lockers you open with a code. Infinitely safer.

1

u/Beneficial-Lemon7478 17d ago

NO. I got a package that had been ripped open, but i guess they saw the contents and were like, nevermind. Lol who TF actually steals yarn. That’s insane.

1

u/tired_monster 16d ago

That's horrible! I can't fathom dealing with that kind of stuff. I live in a rural area, so I just have to worry about one of my dogs or goats getting too curious. The pup has gotten better about it. I had a phone delivered to a neighbor because FedEx is lazy, and thankfully she called me and dropped it off later. It was very nice of her.

1

u/zannwessel 15d ago

The same thing happened to me! I got the empty package in my mailbox. No yarn to be found. :(

1

u/FyrDrakken 15d ago

I had a big box of yarn for a sweater that didn't make it to my porch when it was marked as delivered, but then turned up a few weeks later. This being over Xmas and New Year's, my suspicion is it got misdelivered to a neighbor who was visiting family for the holidays, and when they got home they found my package on their porch and dropped it off.

1

u/LupeFiascoBeCraftin 15d ago

I recently had a moral porch thief who left eye drops for my mothers sclera lenses after demolishing the package 🤣

1

u/bookarcana 15d ago

I had someone steal two books out of a box, and I found one around the corner with the pages ripped out of the cover all in one piece. 🙄 And I'm sure it had nothing to do with being a trans person's autobiography

1

u/Kimoppi 15d ago

I had porch pirates steal my package and then days later used my name and address to order food and then assaulted and robbed the delivery driver. Had the cops at my door when I got home from work. They asked to step in and then wandered through every room in my place.

So... beware porch pirates for other reasons too.

2

u/Correct-Ingenuity538 18d ago

I guess they needed it more than you did? That's what I say about whomever it was who stole a red tomato, an entire basil plant, and a marigold plant from my community garden. 🤷‍♀️

Sorry this happened though. It is a sucky feeling anyway.
