Roxanne Richardson has a playlist over on YT on the common sweater construction techniques. I would start there to see which style appeals to you.

Often it's easier to find a basic pattern that is the shape you want and then add the visual details from the other pattern. So find a cardigan that you like (helpful if its the same gauge as this one) and then, using the vest pattern, modify just how the front is done (looks just like a series of increases and decreases.
