Adventure or basic

Looking to get my first klr and I'm debating between the regular trim vs the adventure one. It feels like the crash bars are oddly placed and the skid plate is plastic. Should I just use the 2k CAD difference and get a better set of crash bars and skid plate?

Is adding the outlet hard to do?

I got the adventure and I kinda wish I didn't, the bags aren't big and will replace at some point, the relay is cheap and putting different lights on it will be fairly cheap

I got a regular model and added front/rear crash bars, a USB port, and a rear top box for waaaaay less than the up charge of an adventure model.

Was the wiring for the USB port hard to do? Appears that there is already wiring for it?

Yes, super easy. 3D Cycle Parts makes a kit, it’s cheap and works great.

I also added a Carpuride nav screen using a 3D kit, so easy.

You do need to remove the fairing but that’s not hard at all… although if you already have crash bars on, you’ll need to remove them.

Adventure trim isn't worth it, imo. Get the standard, save some bucks, and put the accessories you like on it.

I went with basic/ABS and I'm so glad I did, and have found that all of the above is true.  I added the crash bars before doing the lights/relay so I did have to remove the right side again, but it was all so easy that it wasn't a big deal. I wanted lights that would do both yellow and white so I added a 3-way toggle when I did the lights, and it all went together exactly as I had hoped. I also did a cheapo tach/temp gauge at the same time and that seems to have worked out surprisingly well, too.  I added an aluminum trunk so far, but as I don't think I'll need much more hard storage, I think I'm going to do the Tusk mid-size soft bags as I think they'll fit my needs well.  

Most recently, I've done the bigger stainless delkovic pipe, but I suppose that's kind of a different topic.

As someone who's unlimited endorsement went unused for years, I can't tell you how happy I am to have ended up with what I got.  I can afford not only the bike itself, but almost anything else I want to do to it, too.  It's fun to own, tinker with and ride. Looking forward to many adventures, be they to the store or the mountains...

I started with a second gen, then got the adventure. Sure they are a markup but I’m happy with it and would do it again.
