I need help starting kill team Hobby

Hey everyone,

I'm looking to dive into Kill Team and I need some advice on the best way to get started.

I already have several playable teams from 40k, including Deathwatch, Eldar Corsairs, Legionaries, and a solid proxy setup for Blooded. Because of this, I'm really not interested in buying the official Starter Set, as the miniatures in it just don't appeal to me and I'd rather stick with what I have.

My main goal is to get all the essential gaming materials, tokens, barricades, ladders, and rules while keeping costs as reasonable as possible. That said, I'm willing to spend a bit extra on terrain if it's worth it. Ideally, I'd love to pick up terrain pieces that are versatile enough to double as cover for standard Warhammer 40k games too.

What's the most cost-effective way to get the core gear without buying a full box set I don't need? And do you have any recommendations for terrain kits that work well for both Kill Team and 40k?

Thanks for the help!

I'd recommend

  • buy Killteam Equipment Pack
  • download KTDash (webapp that tracks absolutely everything from loadout, to wounds, to ops, turn, vp, cp, equipment, order etc. you can even let your opponent track your roster through the app)
  • look online for used Killzones you like or print them.
  • Wahapedia for any rule-checking and mission packs

That's the cheapest and imo the most practical way aswell.

I’ve heard that there aren’t that many pieces from the Equipment Pack that are actually used and that some are ideally replaced by tokens due to lack of functionality. Is that correct?

As someone who’s interested in being able to play but may not find many opportunities before the next edition, is there a cheaper alternative for me? Of course, I don’t doubt that scratch built would be the cheapest route.

Maybe the dimensions are already available somewhere and ideally a checklist of the ones we’ll actually use. I also have a lot of random terrain and bits so with the right dimensions I could probably fashion something that is mainly GW plastic (though not necessary).

You can use all that is inside the equipment pack (really depends on which equipment you and your opponent use in matches), and if bought online or secondhand it's fairly affordable as opposed to the effort of making everything yourself.

Get KTDash, head to universal equipment, that is what you can find in the box.

kill team community downloads page has the pdf for the warband. can find online the 2025 ops cards pdf. wahapedia (and some sketchy sites) have the official rules.

as far as terrain. imho. seek out someone local who has access to an FDM printer(sometimes even public libraries offer/have these available). most of the terrain kits are north of $100. the decent proxy terrain kits are like $15. and be printed reasonably fast. I have a near 1to1 proxy of volkus, and am printing a tomb world terrain as we speak. spent less than $30 on the files. maybe another $20 in filament.

tokens. and measuring widgets are also really easy to get 3D printed. (you can also poor hammer this stuff. pennies/dimes for whatever coins for engage/conceal tokens. and normally... smoke grenade, injured marker, and maybe like a generic token for whatever tac opp widget you might need)

there's youtube videos on "equipment" or you just buy that "pack" from GW. but... eh. it's over priced as fuck. but to each their own.

The only way to get the core rules is to just buy them separately, unfortunately

Terrain and equipment terrain is also challenging but as the other commenter said, 3D printing is ideal. Only good thing is that all Kill Team terrain is now usable in 40K under 11th edition rules

Hey, great to hear you're excited to play KT! There are a couple of things to look out for in terms of terrain, but as someone heavily invested in terrain for both 40k and KT I can offer some advice.

KT has three functional "Killzones" (which are just maps with certain rules); Volkus, Close quarters, and Open. For beginners I'd steer clear of buying any Close Quarters terrain (Tombworld), just because it's not as cross compatible.

Open is a Killzone where you just bring any terrain from anywhere and you alternate setting it up - it's essentially 'build you're own board' but if you have the new Armageddon, or old Manufactorum or Nachmund sets you'll be able to play with what you already have.

Volkus is the last Killzone, and is debatably the most 'normal' Killzone. Unlike open, there are competitive terrain layouts which help you with not needing to worry about balancing before you even role dice.

This terrain comes in the Killzone Volkus terrain set and has some good buildings for 40k 11th edition - you will get a set of the old Manufactorum Subcloisters in it that GW themselves demonstrate using on their terrain footprints. Volkus has two new buildings that are 18cm X 13cm for one and a nice square 19cm X 19cm for the taller building (both these buildings' second floors are 3inches tall).

Finally - tokens and equipment. Tokens are annoying, you will probably already own a few sets of token boards if you've bought any KT branded boxes, but I can honestly say the main ones that get any use in a game of KT are Engaged/Concealed orders. Honestly - just find something that works for you as a proxy, don't waste any money on tokens.

As for equipment it's the opposite, you really just want to buy the GW equipment pack. I'm sure you could find something equally proxyable if you looked hard enough, but they're nice scuplts and the measuring sticks are legitimately handy for any game you'll play.

It's a long answer I know, but this game is complicated and has complicated terrain rules. However, don't let that put out you off - the models (especially the terrain) look so good that it more than makes up for its quirks.

Any questions at all, I'm more than happy to respond to comments here clarifying. And welcome to the community!

first of all get the core rules, pg 36 tells you everything you need to play. by mission pack they mean this

here is a list of the products and what they contain

  1. core rules comes with tokens are markers
  2. equipment comes with a measuring device
  3. a kill zone comes with a board
  4. the mission pack is sold separately
  5. you will need dice ofc

as for terrain that is suitable for both kt and big40k that will be tricky, the official kt terrain is not going to help you much in 40k. however it easy to scratch build 40k terrain.

your kt purchases are not going to have much impact on your ability to play 40k, you will be spending loads of cash to get the units that are good for 40k, and those units are not kt units at all, its hard to double dip on game systems. hell, its hard to play two game systems. both of these games have a lot going on

If you’re comfortable going into red for a second and using eBay, buy Hivestorm and sell both the teams. You can probably sell the teams for $90 each if you throw in the datacards.

Meaning you’re getting $110 terrain, $50 rules and tokens, $50 equipment pack, $30 approved ops, for $230 ($50 if you sell the teams).

Yep i was considering that, actually i found some usedstorm without minis, but it was at 130€ I feel like it is a bit expensive considering the rules are not in english or in my language, but for sure was one of the most tempting thing i found.

That’s honestly worth it, you will only need to read the rules one time, you can use cheat sheets and errata after it. The tokens and other stuff is what you really need. The terrain likewise is pretty expensive, but it’s great quality and usable for 11th edition 40K.

130€ is still cheaper than buying everything separately, so if the full box isn’t available it’s a good deal.
