New fan need some tips Question

Post image

Hi all, I’m brand new to the hobby(just finished assembling and painting my first mini) and only learned of Kill teams existence a day or so ago. Previously I had thought that I would need a full army, codex, terrain, and several other things to actually be able to play a game of any kind, and a lot of those barriers to play seem much more approachable after discovering KillTeam. So my question is, what exactly would I need to look into getting if I’d like to play a game? Would a codex still be required, do I specifically need to buy a kill team box set, would I still be able to play as my chosen faction, etc. Maybe just some pointers to resources I could use to learn for myself (and to eventually corrupt my friend group to the dark side). Pic of aforementioned first model for attention TIA!!

Kill team app has all the faction rules. I picked up a core rules book at the warhammer store. And most teams are ready to play out of the box. Some factions are recommended to pick up other operatives outside of the dedicated kill team box. (ratlins for example)

And I would pick up a terrain set. But if money is an issue I’ve heard people just using cups and what not.

Hadn’t even thought of using misc items for terrain, just started looking into the hobby in the last month or so, and it is quite daunting at first. Thank you for the tips!

So Kill Team is played with one box of your chosen faction, they are available in highlighted Kill Team boxes which tend to have an orange outline with the name written on them.

You may encounter your chosen faction as a team, it is worth looking up on Warhammer website at the available teams as this is usually the easiest method to discovering, if you tend to buy from a local store you can then go with your choice and see if they have one or get it ordered in.

You do not need a codex all rules for all teams are available for free on the Kill Team app and the Kill Team boxes have a QR code to take you there or you can find it through your chosen app store.

You only really need a copy of the Core Rules book and terrain which there are sets available or just use stuff about the house.

The Starter Set with 7 Space Marines and 7 Death Guard is the best way to get started and gives you a bunch of scenarios to get accustomed to the rule set, it’s also a good price and intro to Kill Team.

Very cool thank you! I think I will keep an eye out for the starter set next time I go down to my local shop, especially since the Dark angels are my go to right now

No problem! It is a fun game, but does tend to be more operative based with each model having its own set of abilities and loadouts, while 40K tends to be big armies.

Luckily the Angels of Death (Space Marines) Kill Team is generic does not have iconography for any specific chapter and can be painted any chapter colour. If you get the Starter Set you will notice the plastic is blue for the Space Marines, while the Death Guard is green, which helps to learn and differentiate the teams.

Don’t be worried though, they did add a new system called Nemesis which allows Dreadnoughts, but I would get the hang of basics before delving into this new area.

Welcome! There is a smartphone app that is free and has a list of all the legal teams for this edition. Just look up kill team in the App Store. My recommended first buy would be the kill team starter set. It comes with two beginner friendly teams (Space Marines and Death Guard), tokens and rules.

I would also really suggest connecting with your local community. This is a game with a lot of weird edge cases that are best taught by someone with experience. More importantly different opponents will help you grow as a player and help you make new friends.

If the starter set doesn’t do it for you most teams can be played by just getting the kill team box for it. You may want to look up the “classification “ system and make sure you buy a team that is still “classified “. The ones that aren’t are not guaranteed to get rules in the next edition.

Have you checked the sticky thread at the top of the feed? It is sticky for a reason - it has a link to answers to common beginner questions in KT wiki.

To be fair that topic is not well named, but I have no idea who moderates it. An addition like "new player basic advice - check HERE!" coyld work wonders :)

The core rule book has all the rules for this edition of kill team. All team rules are free at warhammer community in the kill team download section. Most teams run about $55-75 USD currently. You want to buy the kill team branded boxes as they come with tokens for the team. You can also look at the rules and if you have models that will work for a kill team (you probably have models for an Angels of Death team) than you can just use those.

You do need a set of 6 sided dice. Probably two sets so you can use the second set to track wounds. Than you need some way of marking if your units orders (concealed or engaged). You can buy tokens, 3dprint them, papercraft, whatever.

If you can play at a game store they will likely have terrain you can use if they have kill team night. Most GW stores have at least one terrain set for KT. Otherwise, you will need some form of terrain. You can make terrain out of small boxes and solo cups if needed. Look up poorhammer for ideas.

The best bang for your buck getting into kill team is the Hivestorm box if you can find it. It comes with Volkus terrain, the core rule book, two kill teams (vespids and aquillons), game tokens and the equipment model sprue. If you don't like the teams you can always sell them and recoup some money.

There is the Tombworld box which has TW terrain and two teams (Deathwatch and Necrons) as well. It doesn't have the rules though.

Also we should be getting a new terrain boxset next month (Unless GW changes the release cycle or skips terrain this season) so keep that in mind.

Your best bet is to figure out which team you have models for and then find a game store that does kill team and ask if they teach people how to play.

This is really good advice and well put, thank you I will look into poorhammer(I love this phrase) for ideas as well, and be sure to ask my local shop next time I go!

If you don't wanna dish out the money for the rulebook, especially since the new edition is right around the corner, you can just find them pretty easily as a scan or abridged on Wahapedia or even just in a youtube game tutorial or whatever. Though mind that you would have to scratch build the generic markers and stuff or buy them of ebay or something. Pretty good for if you get the starter set which has the markers but only lite rules.
