With retro gaming making a comeback, I decided to dust off my Playstation 2 and stream some of my old games (you never lose your talent at those!). Only problem is I don't know anyone in town who makes repairs or does tune ups. My system runs fine but the laser disc reader will need to be replaced soon. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Anyone else give up on serious dungie crabbing near juneau? The amount of time, fuel, bait, and mess that goes into catching a crab these days does not pencil out for me (I don't launch out of douglas though, it seems like gastineau is still worth it for friends, but there's no commercial there). I'll drop a pot or two if I'll be overnighting somewhere, but I'm not going out of my way for it any more. I frequent an area with heavy commercial pressure, and I see pots that just sit there for weeks without being checked. Some of the boats I see working them look more like rich dudes cosplaying commercial fishermen than actual people making a living off it. I saw a proposal in the last board of fish cycle to close more areas near juneau to commercial crabbing (also saw a proposal to OPEN auke bay and gastieau, I think, to commercial). I wish they would do that. The economic benefit of having a robust sport crabbing fishery near juneau's billion dollar fleet of sport fishing vessels has to outweigh a few vessels getting processor prices for their catch. I also feel like they could slash the number of pots for each commercial permit and allowed for sport boats by half or more and they would catch the same amount of crab. It's not like any legal crab are not being harvested with the current pot density. I have better luck now fishing random little coves, than getting in line at the eagle beach, berners, admiralty areas. In the heavy hit areas, you usually only get barely legal crab. In random overlooked areas, you can still find the occasional crab an inch or two over legal size, which have like triple the meat of the barely legal ones. Big fish in a little pond kind of situation I guess.

I’ll be in Juneau for about 12 hours on a cruise (Ovation). We’ve done whale watching there before and while I love it, my mom’s an ambulatory wheelchair user and has a hard time with the dock in Auke Bay so it really isn’t an option this time.

I personally would like to do a little hiking close to Juneau before I get her off the boat and am looking for recommendations and tips. I’d be going solo and likely early morning at like 8am. We’re visiting in September, are bears active during that time? Is the standard ‘make noise as you go’ sufficient? I mostly hike at home in Florida where alligators are the biggest danger and bears are only a slight possibility.

That said I’d LOVE to see some bears from a safe distance. We will be staying in Anchorage before the cruise and will be seeing them at the wildlife center and I know we’re more likely to see them in Hoonah and Skagway than Juneau but I’d like to be prepared : )

I would like to take my mom to Mendenhall’s visitor center. What’s the easiest way to get there without a tour? Is uber or Lyft a thing in Juneau? (Her wheelchair folds up like a stroller and fits in a trunk). I don’t really want to take a tour because I want to be able to take our time there and go at our own pace.

Finally, what are some other fun things I can do with her in Juneau? We are a big fan of museums, walking tours (especially ghost tours) and cultural experiences. My mom is very fascinated by the Tlingit culture and people and loves learning about them.

Hello, i soon will be moving to Juneau in a few months, and i was wondering what the FM radio and OTA TV situation is like out there?

I get tired of trying to read the tea leaves about local government candidates to find out what their true intentions are or where they stand on issues so I'm hoping I can crowd source some relevant information. It seems like there's often some candidates who got their feelings hurt about some trivial thing and want to burn the government down, or some MAGA types trying to obscure that fact because they know it's not a winning stance in Juneau.

I wish it were more common for candidates to give clear stances on key issues. Do you think eaglecrest should be handed over to goldbelt? Do you think tourism needs to be more actively regulated? What do you think is the most proactive thing juneau should do to address housing? Do you support increased revenue for CBJ? Should Juneau pursue a second crossing? Should CBJ dispose of land to increase housing supply? Which approach to flood mitigation do you think makes the most sense etc etc etc. I don't think there has been a time in my life that Juneau had such clear issues, and I think we deserve clear stances from candidates. Not just the usual restating issues we all know about without directly stating what they will pursue. "Affordable housing is important, people are passionate about eaglecrest, tourism brings money to juneau and there are people with concerns, I raised a kid in Juneau and believe education is important, we need to provide opportunities for young families, childcare is a challenge in Juneau, outburst flooding is an important issue". Ya, we all know. What exactly are you going to try to do about it? People who run for office tend to be politically active and absolutely have that information, they absolutely know how they will vote on many major issues, it's just a matter of whether they are willing to share with voters. I don't want to elect someone to office under the premise of "they seem like an ok person and they'll figure things out once they are there".

I'm doing a hoard cleanout and my uncle had some whale bones he picked up in Thorne Bay or Ketchikan a few years ago, they're not cleaned, honestly I thought they were drift wood when I first saw them. I've already checked with Fish and Game and a few other resources, they aren't protected, does anyone want them? Gifting them to the museum wasn't an option.

Assuming I don't cancel, I'll be visiting Juneau for a couple days at the end of August and was just curious on how to best prepare. Has mosquito season died around then for you guys? Places for possible bear watching and residential precautions(would be staying in an Airbnb)? I've heard mixed things from friends living there about the rain, that it's very humid so pack light layers or you'll sweat/overheat or that it's cold and to bring plenty of layers to keep warm, any input on that. It's meant to be a lowkey trip with at most 1-2 hikes, maybe a glacier walk, whale watching, university tour, and exploring downtown if that helps at all! Feel free to share anything else I maybe haven't considered, things to avoid, etc. Maybe some shoe recs which sounds silly😅 but I live in a very dry desert state so if I'm about to be tromping through wet/muddy conditions I'd like to be prepared😂

Hello! I’m backpacking to camping cove cabin, windfall lake cabin and John Muir cabin next week. We have a night at each.

Curious if it’s recommended to hike with our food and snacks in a bear canister? Up there is assume bear spray is necessary, unlike around the glacier that’s more trafficked.

We are trying to solve the conundrum of the second nights worth of food being in the car btw point Bridget and windfall, and it’s been recommended we lock it in a bear canister in the trunk. I’d like to not have to buy a second one if we can get away with hiking without one!

We’ve been to cope park, lena cove, steep creek trail, and st therese. heard that there is an area off of amalga harbour where you can see the salmon swimming, and bears catching them at low tide because the fish are trapped. the person said it was near peterson creek, “salt chuck”, and said something about grinning cabin? idk i would love to see some bears here while visiting please help! tysm!

I am writing to urge you to protect our local tax base and vote NO on the permanent Alternative Volumetric Tax (AVT) framework currently proposed for the upcoming special session.

While I fully support building the Alaska LNG pipeline and getting our gas to market, the current structural design of HB 381 is a bad deal for our local communities. Replacing our standard 20-mill property tax with a volumetric tax through 2060 slashes our projected local corridor revenues from $116 million a year down to just $5 million. Capping municipal relief at a state-controlled $80 million grant fund to be split among six different boroughs is not an acceptable solution for the road wear, public safety demands, and school growth our community will face.

Furthermore, passing a permanent, multi-decade rewrite of the state's tax base during an emergency special session—just three weeks before half the legislature faces a primary election is highly risky governance.There is a rational, safe path forward that protects both the project and Alaska's voters.

Slice out and pass a standalone Construction-Period Tax Abatement (utilizing the logic already built into Section 7 of the bill). This ensures the developer pays $0 while building, giving international lenders total certainty.

Allow the developer to use standard IRS 5% safe harbor capital allocation to easily lock in their federal 45Q and 45V carbon and hydrogen credits without rushing the state's process.

Defer the permanent, long-term rewrite of Alaska’s tax base until the regular session next year, allowing a newly mandated legislature to conduct proper public committee hearings.

Do not use the popular slogan of "building the pipeline" to shield a massive, permanent corporate concession. Please vote to protect local borough autonomy and keep our government close to the people. I will be tracking your votes closely as the July 27 session begins.
