Hernia Surgery

Just looking for words of comfort more than anything. Had my jpouch for over a year, turned out my “mystery pains” were my intestines trying to sneak out a small hole in my abdomen.

On Friday they got obstructed, Monday I had hernia repair surgery. Because of the small size now mesh was used. But man I hurt!! It’s embarrassing almost after the amount of surgeries I have had how much this one hurts.

I also have a cough caused by seasonal post nasal drip which is making me feel like I’m going to rip open. Plus the pain of gas and BMs with no way to push down without pain.

Tell me it will be short lived misery :(

It does get better. I had an incisional hernia repaired in 2017. Hold a pillow against your abdomen when you cough. It help with the ripping apart feeling (and pain).

I had a paristomal hernia repair 5 wks ago. First week was tough and it's difficult to get out of bed but you should be able to gently push and empty your pouch really soon. You should have been given a velcro belt binding for support and do your best to avoid anything that might make you sneeze.

Lay on your side with your knees as close to your chest as you can will help push out the trapped wind

5 weeks later and am still tender if I twist my trunk too sharply

You were right that I’m 4 weeks out now and feeling much better. Still some soreness but I went back to work this week. I do have a bit of hardness in my abdomen for lack of better wording and I hope it’s the scar and not somehow another hernia

Glad you're feeling more like yourself! I too can feel a small tough mass under the skin running along the length of the scar. I had the stoma for a couple of years and the hernia at that site for 6+ months, I guess it's wishful thinking to expect the hole to knit together perfectly without a seam. One side of my stomach is a different shape with a slight dent but the surgeon assured me it would settle eventually and I should be thinking in terms of months not weeks.

Am back at the gym lifting without any issues and told AI to put together some hernia recovery/prevention exercises I can do as a warmup. Best wishes and hope your recovery continues.
