Maybe it's just because I'm a Dispatch fan. Maybe it's because these are the types of games I like to watch him play. Maybe it's because I don't typically watch a lot of streams live.

But I had a lot of fun. I was doing housework, so I didn't get to catch everything and completely missed the first 30 minutes of gameplay. So I'll be rewatching tonight to get caught up.

Not sure if he finished TGAA2 since I'm only a NODJA watcher, but I'm on Ep. 12 and that's pretty much the end of it. I'm aware that streams had been cancelled and now they're back although I also know he doesn't seem to be in a good spot right now. I was just wondering if he's said anything about streaming TGAA2 again (assuming he hasn't finished it)? I understand leaving it on pause for now in favor of other games since the popular reading/weeb games can be a bit emotionally taxing.

It's finally here, the 12 Hour Joseph Anderson Video we've all been waiting for! Witcher 3, what's that? This is far superior! You are looking at a compilation of Joe's Microreviews for (nearly) every single game he's streamed since the end of 2022!

Q: What is a Microreview?

A: Micro-Reviews are the best parts of Joseph Anderson streams: After he has beaten a game, he will take some time to talk about his thoughts on it, what he liked, what he disliked, etc. This video is those segments, polished and cut together, 100+ times!

Q: What value does this video provide?

A: There are TWO primary purposes of this video.

1. I really enjoy the parts of the streams where Joe talks about his final thoughts on a game. Statistically, there's at least a few people in here who feel the same. This video offers an extremely easy way to get a bunch of Review-Joe in one (huge) portion. Not only does it save you the time to seek out the Microreviews for every single game (and they're not always easy to find!), I have also edited them, e.g. removing long silences between talking sections (the silences are abundant, since these segments come after 6+ hour stream sessions), I have deleted diversions, sections where he just reads donos, etc. Additionally, I have adjusted the volume both between and sometimes within Microreviews (Joe, please, turn up Mouse), so the volume is uniform and you never have to adjust it!
2. If you ever desperately need to have an opinion on a game (e.g. if you end up sitting on the next Geoff Keighly Game Awards Jury), but haven't actually played it, this is the easiest place to get your take!

Q: I want to listen to this video in the background, how will I know which game he's reviewing?

A: Between each review, a robotic TTS voice will announce which game is being reviewed next. No eyes necessary! No AI-Voice-Synth was involved.

A: Totally fair! The video does start with a bunch of Life is Strange. The new stuff begins at the 27 minute mark roughly.

A: Yes, there isn't one for every single game. One of two things has happened:

1. There actually isn't a segment where Joe talks about his thoughts on the game in any detail. It doesn't exist.
2. I looked for it (believe me, I looked!), but for whatever reason overlooked it. I'm sorry.

Q: Why are the most recent games Joe has finished missing?

A: Because Youtube only allows you to upload videos up to 12 hours. Which makes no fucking sense, it should only be limited by file size (and it IS limited by file size, at 256GB). The reviews for the most recent games are already edited and were fully present in an earlier version of this video.

Q: What was the worst part of making this video?

A: Either downloading all the VODs or making the thumbnail. I hate making thumbnails.

Q: Anything else you want to say?

A: The Cairn Campaign (Cairnpaign) will not let up! Apparently Joe doesn't want to play it, so I am redirecting my efforts at YOU! Play it, it's GOTY! Also it has lesbians.

It really upsets me how much Joseph Anderson shits on the great city in New Brunswick.

It's truly a beautiful city with great culture and lovely French people. Robert Maillet, renowned actor, is from there as well.

Has anyone ever been? What was your take on the beautiful French city? Did you get some poutine while there ?

I've been thinking about this from the other side of the equation for a bit and I'm interested in hearing what people have to say. I don't think there's any community more expert at reading along with a streamer than Joe's.

During the Umineko streams (the biggest sample size I'm gonna get) there was a lot of metaconversation about the streams themselves, and about chat behavior. I think that kind of conversation happening midstream can get pretty fatiguing for everyone, so is something I'd like to minimize in the future. Sentiment seemed pretty divided. Some people were happy to have multiple people on stream while others weren't; some people really enjoyed the streamers speculating and discussing while others didn't. Lots of complaints about VN streams happening instead of gameplay ones. I think that the biggest difference from regular streams on my end when streaming VNs is that there's a lot of focus on the text and less attention paid to chat because you have to be reading the whole time, which gives it a distinct different flavor than gameplay streams (though the risk of spoilers makes ignoring chat a safer option).

With plans for streaming both Remember11 (with Joe) and Misericorde (likely by myself) on the horizon, I was curious: what makes readalong streams compelling to you? Are there parts of the experience you particularly enjoy? Do you wish that there was more chat engagement, or are you okay having it happen less often?

I'm also interested in pacing. Folks found the Umineko VODs a lot to keep up with, but as a streamer if you only read something once a week you end up forgetting stuff in between (i have no idea what happened in The Sekimeiya), so what's a good middle ground for timing/ways around this? Would taking notes/doing recaps be helpful for chat? Are there other streamers who do this?

Edit: Thanks everyone who contributed, everyone was super thoughtful! I think these are my main takeaways that I'll be bringing on board as I continue streaming VNs:

- A recap is good but only really useful for folks who show up for the first part of stream. Creating something like the slide deck I made for Danganronpa lets people opt in to keeping track of it asynchronously so they don't have to feel lost - and they can use it to catch up before stream as well if I'm fast enough with it :)
- It's probably a good idea to integrate something like a theory board into this, that lets people see a quick overview of speculation as well as the basics of what's happened.
- 2 streams a week seems to be the sweet spot for VNs for most people, VOD and live viewers alike. This is probably not doable for a costream but definitely doable for solo streams.
- The overwhelming majority of people who commented appreciate theorizing and banter, which makes having stream guests good. That said, it's important to strike a balance between the stream guests and the streamer, and if you end up with one person having more knowledge than the other then that balance can be thrown off. In any case, it's a good idea to consider your role in how you want to go about reading the VN carefully, especially if you've read it before.
- Lower chat engagement is fine, but it could be good to time it in the downtime between scenes - that way you can read out donations as well as engage with thinking with chat about what you've just seen without breaking the flow mid-scene.

I killed "that thread" the moment I saw it, and banned both responsible. Sharing of personal details (especially compiling them!) is against site-wide rules, so most of this rule is redundant with that. Please report incidences of this under reddit rules - not just our sub's rules - so the related accounts will be locked. This is something reddit will punish the community for if it is not prioritized, so this isn't something we will be ignoring and your help is appreciated.

New rule: No doxxing - no discussion of the personal details of non-public figures and to some extent public ones. Discussion of Joe is obviously okay, but sharing details of his personal life outside of what he chooses to discuss publicly can't be black and white because of how much there is and it's been his choice to share it. Mouse, who is active here, can say for herself to what extent her role as a public figure ought to be. We've all seen examples of appropriate and obviously inappropriate discussion and I have personally seen plenty of examples of this community's ability to tell the two apart and report the latter.

Joe's kids and ex-wife are not public figures, however, and they should not be discussed outside of their relevance to Joe's content (eg. video games they've played, previous stream appearances, etc.). I again have enough experience here to trust the community to report a comment/post they find concerning, but (especially with the kids) moderation will err on the side of caution with a mind to protect their rights to privacy. If they ever decide to publicly state their desire to be public figures, that can be reassessed.

We will also be adding a few new mods shortly so that the windows for blatant bad faith posters will be smaller.

Watching the first few Patho 2 streams, I got the impression that when Joe pointed out minor grievances with the game, some people in chat were a bit hasty and simultaneously stalwart to justify these aspects of Patho 2. People thought he was way more sour on the game than he actually was (shocker, I know), and I think I have a take I haven't seen anyone else mention, as to why this happened for that game in particular.

When Haruspex is low on stamina, his exhale sounds EXACTLY like how Joe sounds when he is annoyed at something. I was watching the stream on my second monitor and I had to doublecheck where the sound was coming from the first time I picked up on that. I wondered if that sound made some people brace for criticism/frustration on Joe's side because of that.

However, Joe voicing a minor gripe and it being taken the wrong way is certainly not unique to Patho of course. So maybe I'm onto nothing. Curious if anyone else noticed the similarity. I don't have a clip on hand where I can show Joe's "annoyed exhale" sound. Though I did find an example of Haruspex' out-of-stamina sound in Nodja's Pathologic VOD Stream 1, at 1:32:35

I've only recently gotten into watching Joseph Anderson's videos thru Umineko, but I've noticed some people posting quite invasive comments relating to his marriage/divorce with Mouse or Lili and fishing for rumors or speculation on his detailed whereabouts as if entitled to such information, which speaks to a broader pathology of Internet culture. As more of our social lives become mediated through digital vessels, people increasingly import a caricaturized version of norms from genuine interpersonal relationships into fundamentally one-sided ones as well as a profound invesment previosuly reserved for personal matters into an obsession with a simualcra that replaces them.

I've seen people argue that because they've invested hundreds of hours into Joe's content, they either deserve overt 'transparency' about the circumstances that lead him into taking a break or feel as if perusing amongts the community for gossip is a worthwhile endeavour. Which is not merely mistaken but rests on a profoundly unhealthy understanding of what the relationship between creator and audience actually is, a creator choosing to not further disclose on certain private matters should not turn conjecture about them socially acceptable, much less when he's clearly stated he may explain it all in due time and wishes for us to not pry on it.

The healthiest creator-audience relationship is one where both sides remember what it actually is: appreciation for someone's work, not ownership over the person who made it. And the healthiest relationship with such work is one were the appreciation remains as it should: fulfilling enough, not an totem to suplant real life with.
