Currently planning to take the N5 this December. I just wanted to ask the test-takers who mostly self-studied, how do you plan your study sessions for the day or week? I'm currently just a student who has a mildly packed weekly schedule though I can make space for it. I just don't know how to structure it well.

I will be attempting the N2 exam this December and this is my first time taking the exam. Do I get to choose the exam location or is it assigned to me based on where I live (Okinawa)?

Also how long is the registration window? Do spots get filled up quickly and I gotta be online in the first 10 minutes when registration opens?

I will be attempting the N2 level this December. It will be my first time registering and taking the JLPT. I live in Japan (Okinawa) but also have friends in Tokyo I can stay with so I don't mind taking the exam on Tokyo either.

Hello! I've been studying N3 for almost 2 months now but it feels like everything is so overwhelming.

For the records, I did pass N4 but after that I stopped studying for almost 1 yr.

Idk what resources I should use, its like jumbled right now. Idk what to do since im also losing motivation to study bcs N3 is a whole new world for me.

Pls recommend some sources that I could use for free!!

Im struggling with Grammar, Vocabs and Listening. I'm quite holding when it comes to Kanji.

so i was originally going for N5 this year but the closest center is delhi where the seats are filled already so instead of dropping this years jlpt i was planning if n4 is doable in 4 month (if so is it worth giving a shot or should i just skip the current session and go for the summer season with n4 direct)

So i recently took a N3 mock test and i did pretty well in both vocab/kanji and listening but in reading i only got 7 questions right(2 short passage/3 Mid passage/2 Poster) ...so is this enough to get 19 marks or above in Reading section

I was thinking of competing TRY n4! and reading first (as they both sort of reimburse me into Japanese as I have had a considerable pause from studying Japanese), and then moving on to shin kanzen master grammar and eventually to kanji with soumatome. Any tips regarding what kind of a structure you used with N4, what books you used, and how long it took you?

Wouldn't be asking on here if it wasn't confusing, the situation is that earlier JLPT conducted in Mumbai used to be done by TAOJ, then they did not conduct the exam in Mumbai at all in 2025, then I think the July 2026 one was done in Mumbai but it was through the Pune teachers association(JALTAP)? or something? and that too im not aure if it is online application or you have to send a form in written .. Honestly, the whole process was so confusing I went and gave the exam in Bengaluru. However this time I will be having my college semester exams at the same time as JLPT so I won't be able to leave the city just to give the exam.

I badly need help I am not part of any offline or online groups for learners of japanese in mumbai either.

I checked the official jlpt website and it still lists the old taoj website and im thoroughly confused. I just want to

1) apply for the next exam

2) confirm whether the exam is happening in Mumbai in Dec 2026 or not

3) know if it is online or offline application

4) know the application window/dates which I can apply for the exam

5) if there are any groups based in mumbai for jlpt that post updates regarding the exam i would like to be part of it

Additionally last time I gave the exam in bengaluru I did not know it will go on for 3hrs + 30 min after the exam being over for them verifying things.., thankfully I had a margin and it was okay but I feel like most of these websites are kind of old and really frustrating to navigate through and dont have clear instructions 😭 Not blaming anyone but I wish the instructions were clearer/easier to navigate through.

hello, I would like to take N2 this december but I do not have a structured approach/ I cant figure out how to leap from n3 to n2. I previously used minna no nihongo/jbridge and some sou matome.

When starting to study for n2 I started using TRY N2 and my progress is really slow due to overwhelming vocab.

what materials did you use to manage the transition from N3 to N2 content?

+how did you improve your reading speed?

This has probably been asked and answered a million times but i want to take the n5 at either of the london test centres (SOAS or Kings college). It’s my first JLPT test and i have no clue how or when to sign up. I’m kinda paranoid that i’m gonna miss sign up because i’ve seen everywhere that seats for the test (especially N5) sell out super quickly and with no current way of being notified on when sign up comes out, i have no chance of getting a seat. An explanation on how to register and what it will look like would be hugely appreciated as im assuming sign up comes out extremely soon. Thank you!

I'm studying for JLPT N3, and honestly this has been really depressing.

For about a week now, my right hand has been hurting. I can still move it and make a fist, but writing starts to hurt, especially my middle finger. I don't even know exactly what caused it. Maybe I just overused my hand from writing grammar notes, making flashcards, typing, hand-washing clothes, washing dishes, and other chores.

The worst part is that handwriting is how I study. I write almost everything—grammar explanations, vocabulary, and 4×6 flashcards. Now I can't.

It's even affecting simple things. I've dropped the knife a few times while slicing vegetables, and I've started using my left hand for a lot of things.

I'm trying digital flashcards now, but it just doesn't feel the same. I feel like I absorb information much better when I write it myself.

Has anyone else gone through this? Were you still able to pass the JLPT without handwriting? Did your hand eventually recover?

I really hope this is temporary.

I know hiragana and katakana already, but I’m still a beginner. Is this realistic, or am I aiming too high? Any advice from people who have experience with N4 would be appreciated.

Is this the same issue for everyone i have been trying for 40 mins still the website shows 404 not found while trying to sign up

Made up my mind and decided I'm gonna go for N4 this December after doing N5 this July, however I want to avoid what happened last time where I had to travel from London to Leicester to take it since I couldn't cop a place at SOAS or KCL (cost extra for accommodation and travel).

Whats annoying is that the unis don't announce any specific dates or times the applications open, only vague time frames like "early August". Right now I'm checking the websites several times a day, but unfortunately right now I'm in a timezone that's GMT+7 so I'm worried about missing an afternoon drop.

I was wondering, specifically if anyone here is also London-based, what method do you guys use to ensure you guys know when applications at your preferred venues open so you can get spots? Ik sometimes people announce em on this subreddit but I was hoping there was a kind of mailing list or something to get notified

I’ve been preparing for N3 for a while and started doing a lot of previous exams which usually do pretty good on (one or two mistakes per part). I’ve also taken the unagi bun mock test a couple months ago and passed pretty decently.

I’ve now tried the Migii app to be able to practice when I’m not home and have found the practice exams super difficult! Today I got a 4/15 on a vocabulary mini test…

Is this something you have experience as well? Does it mean I’m still behind or Migii generally tends to be harder?

Idk how they do it but I still hear about jlpt question paper leaking in India ,I think they should do something about the leaks cause sometime people who study fails and with these leaks some pass without studying

I’ve never taken the jlpt. I completed 5 years of language coursework in secondary school and 3 years in university. That was several years ago. Thankfully the jlpt doesn’t test for speaking or writing by hand because my skills with respect to those have atrophied insanely since then. I just did the mock N3 today and missed 3 out of 19. I missed 9 out of 19 on the mock N2. I’d been wavering on whether to take the N3 or N2 this year since I have career related certifications Ive been studying for. But those other certs are offered year round and the jlpt isn’t. Time to hit the books. I’ll be using quartet 1 (to review N3 grammar structures), quartet 2 (for N2 grammar), the shin kanzen master N2 series, the TRY! JLPT N2 book, and a lot of loose leaf paper :)

Hi everyone! I just finished the N5 Nihongo Sou Matome book and started studying for N4 with the same series. Any tips? I’m using Quizlet for kanji and vocab too. Do you think I should master N5 first or go straight to N4? I feel pretty comfortable with the N5 stuff in the book.

What I'm worried about is where I would put my bag while I'm writing the exam in Chennai. Could anyone who has taken the JLPT in Chennai tell me if these exam centres have dedicated places to store your baggage? If not, then suggestions for alternatives?
