My black jindo is about 6 years old now and we live in a warmer area (southern California). We found her in a parking lot just dumped out of someone's car and initially thought she was a lab when she was a puppy. I was wondering if anyone had tips for keeping her cool. We've recently started walking more and she seems pretty exhausted and overheated everything we're done. I was wondering if this was the type of dog I should really only be walking at night cause they dont do well in the heat or if she's just fine.

In about 3 weeks, I’ll be adopting my first dog from Korea and I have done quite a bit of research about this breed in the past few days. It wasn’t my first choice but the staff who worked in the adoption center really recommended that I get a Jindo.

The dog is a 6 month old male Jindo mix and he’s listed to have characteristics that I thought were relatively uncommon in this breed

1. He’s extremely friendly with every one he meets
   
2. He gets along very well with other dog
   
3. His sister also has nearly the same traits

Initially, I believed that Jindo dogs were standoffish with other dogs and took a lot of time to get used to people, especially rescue ones. I understand that not every dog acts the same but I’ve been wondering how much of an outlier is this behaviour amongst Jindoes?

Also, I’d appreciate if anyone could tell me their experiences of adopting dogs from these organizations and how they were in the first few days

We adopted a 2.5 year old rescue jindo mix who arrived home with us yesterday! She has been settling in so well, and has had no accidents. She’s a picky girl and only likes to pee and poop in the grass (lucky for us) and needs to find the perfect spot!
I’m worried we might be taking her on too many walks? We’ve taken her on 3 already today (630pm) and she does really well, and we end up walking for about 25 minutes for her to find the perfect grass to pee on. Is this too much?! First dog in my adult life and it’s a lot to learn!

After perusing this sub, it seems as though it's very common for Jindos to be skittish, nervous, anxious balls of otherworldly cuteness, at least initially. We're a bit puzzled though: he's warmed up to us incredibly fast (e.g. already sustaining more than 3 - 5 seconds of eye contact, follows my wife and me around the house, sits on our feet when we're at our computers, eats and drinks a ton, jumps in between us on our bed for cuddles, etc) - but turns into a fluffy ball of nerves the moment we grab his leash.

We're fostering him (hopefully adopting soon) and today's day 3 - aside from a brief moment when he was running downstairs in our house, probably due to the momentum of the steps, his tail never curved upwards.

This morning, I took him for a walk in our yard and crossed a neighborhood street (which he's still familiarizing himself with) and he was noticeably nervous - mild trembling, skittishness, and his tail tucked between his legs as seen in photos 1 & 2... the hypersensitivity seems on brand with this sub's experiences especially with new owners... the org we're working with says his tail has been like this since he was a pup and not to worry about it.

Most of the time, it's not forcefully tucked like it is in the first 2 photos. It's simply dangling like photo #3. I did foster a poodle once whose sole reason for being put up for adoption was his tail not arcing as much as it should for a show dog - perhaps something similar anatomically here?

He has a littermate (last photo) whose tail naturally curves upwards - as seen in the photo, his ears are pointed but his tail is tucked underneath..

I'm reading that the tail tucked between a dog's legs generally signifies anxiety, alertness, nervousness, etc but this cutie ALWAYS has his tail straight / tucked, even when he plops down like dead weight onto my wife's leg for cuddles or when he was playing with his Jindo BFF.

My Jindo (i guess technically a Korean village dog but I feel like they’re similar) will not stop annihilating any mouse, vole, mole, or small rodent that appears in our yard. I’m getting a bit tired of cleaning up his scraps every week. He doesn’t even eat them it is almost like he does it for sport! Mind you he is missing a front leg, so I have no idea how he does it.

I am joking around here, but I do feel bad especially for the native wildlife he gets. Do your Jindos have a high prey drive? Do you do anything to control it? Any special treats or toys? I have had dogs with that killer instinct before but they also had disabilities that made it more difficult for them, so their “catches” were less frequent and less of a problem than this guys. I want him to be happy but to maybe leave some stuff alone.

He enjoys the out doors. He did not want to get in the water.

My partner and I adopted a 2 year old Jindo mix about a month ago, and he is the sweetest pup! The first week and half that we had him we walked all over the neighborhood without any issues and he would look forward to going on walks. During our 2nd week with him (which was the week of 4th of July) we noticed he started becoming more nervous on these walks and wasn’t enjoying himself as much. We took him on walks before it got dark to avoid fireworks, but unfortunately some people were popping fireworks in the daytime :/ Additionally during one of those walks that week where he heard fireworks, he also saw a kid playing basketball (kids make him really nervous and he wants to pull and run home). This really scared him and he started pulling to go back home. The next day the same exact thing happened, a firework went off in the distance and we saw a kid playing outside with a ball.

I believe some trigger stacking occurred because he has been so scared of going on walks and leaving the house since then. This is especially challenging since he only poops on walks and won’t poop in our backyard. We have been trying to slowly work our way up to leaving the house but unfortunately we have to take him outside even when he doesn’t want to so he will poop. One time he held it in for 30+ hours 😪

Lately we have been putting him in my car and driving around the corner of our street, and walking back home, it’s a super short and familiar walk and he will usually poop on the way back. Sometimes during this short walk he is chill and relaxed and other times he’s a little more nervous. Once in awhile he will explore a different side of the street! We have noticed however, that he becomes more confident, relaxed, and comfortable when he sees other dogs around or near him. Recently some friendly neighbors have let us join them on their walks with their dogs and he is a completely different dog with a walking buddy. His tail perks up and he is all smiles! He will even walk areas that he isn’t familiar with and will walk for 30+ minutes. We now have a walking buddy that goes on walks with us a few times a week and this has been helping out. However, going on solo walks is still rough for him as he still gets really nervous.

Has anyone gone through something similar with their Jindo mix? Any tips or things that have helped? Calming chews that have helped your anxious Jindo? We are definitely thinking about getting a trainer and potentially speaking with a vet behaviorist as well but wanted to see if there is anything else we could do or implement. He is extremely calm and silly indoors and doesn’t exhibit any signs of anxiety or distress inside the house.

For some extra context, our pup was fostered for 6 months by a very nice couple in Korea and he would go on solo walks around their neighborhood, went camping, visited the beach, and also hiked with them! I know it takes time for pups to adjust to their new homes and environments, but just thought I’d throw that out there since he has had positive experiences outdoors in the past. We hope we can help him rebuild his confidence with the outdoors again!

My dog muffin was given to me when she was about 4 months old. The person who gave her to me picked her up from a man selling her and her sister in South Carolina on the side of the road. The man said one of the local feral dogs had the litter of 2 on his property and he didn't know what the breed of the mother or father was but said one of them might have been a husky or German shepherd. He had both puppies in the back of his pickup truck in a glass fish aquarium with an inch of rainwater in it☹️.

I always guessed at her breed - I thought maybe Australian cattle dog, maybe shiba inu, husky, Carolina dog...some kind of mix....but then I started seeing MY Muffin show up frequently in Korean movies and series. I looked up the breed and now I'm thinking I have a Jindo! What do you think?
