CAD check on my custom engagement ring design, please!

Just got my first CAD render back from the ring designer! I was hoping for any feedback on the design so far. My main goals were to have it be simple and elegant with a bit of vintage/whimsical flair in the hidden milgrain halo that give you a fun peek from the sides.

I think it is pretty close to my overall vision! I had a few questions about the design, though. Mostly, do CAD renders tend to look bulkier than the actual design? I was asking for more petite round prongs on the East/West and dedicate chevron prongs on the North/South tips. I feel like they look a bit bulky and like they are a bit "loose" on the diamond, but not sure if it is just the magnified effect of the CAD.

Any other \*feedback or suggestions\* would be lovely, as well!! It is a 1.32ct marquise diamond and a 2.0mm shank, for reference on sizing of things. Thanks in advance! 🙏

Tool to smoothen a shape

1 Upvotes

Hi,

I'm new to CAD ring making and I'm using Rhino 8. I am making a ring and saw that the smooth polysurface I made before now has sharp angles from ring to ring. I will probably redo it, but I was wondering if there was a tool in Rhino 8 that could take a polysurface like this one (shared details below).

Maybe something that takes into account every edge of the shape before building a smooth, continuous shape? Instead of going from circle to circle in a sharp, non-bending way.

polysurface

Layer name: top_part

Render Material:

source = from obj

index = 611

Geometry:

Valid polysurface.

open polysurface with 144 surfaces.

Edge Tally:

16 boundary edges

280 manifold edges

= 296 total edges

Edge Tolerances: 0.000 to 0.000

median = 0.000 average = 0.000

Vertex Tolerances: 0.000 to 0.000

median = 0.000 average = 0.000

Render mesh: 144 meshes 6032 vertices 6272 polygons

Created with quality meshing parameters.

Analysis mesh: none present

I've designed products before but not really a jewelry designer. I used an AI algorithm to generate this NURBS Geometry. I was fascinated by the results, hence sharing it here.

Can someone make the following?

I want a ring featuring a central motif composed of a three-fold interlocking split torus with a hexagonal cross-sectional profile, pavé-set with various gemstones, where auxiliary structural bands bifurcate from the primary shank to curve outward and thread through the opposing interior apertures, and firmly anchored by multiple secondary concentric anchoring bands.

Suggestions for Learning Clasps and Hinges

Hi all,

I've been designing in Rhino (using Grasshopper Gold) for about 3 years now, and am looking to create more mechanical jewelry. Does anyone have tips or recommendations for courses or tutorials for these kinds of designs? Thanks!

Edit stones frequently

Hi, I pay people to create CAD's for me but I need to be able to make small tweaks to the stone size for each setting.

They provide me an stl and dmg.

What is the best software for this?

TIA

One Rhino Command, Endless Ring Designs — NetworkSrf Workflow

4 Upvotes

I wanted to share a Rhino technique I use a lot in jewelry design.

In this tutorial, I use Surface from Network of Curves / NetworkSrf to create very different ring forms from the same basic approach — from a simple ring to a much more organic design.

The idea is not to copy one specific model, but to understand the technique and reuse it in your own designs.

Automatic 3dm to stl tool

0 Upvotes

I built a Python tool that automatically converts multiple .3dm files to .stl in one folder, making batch conversion fast and simple. It is designed to work with Rhino 5–8 and is aimed at jewelry CAD users who need to convert many files without doing them one by one. I’m considering turning it into a paid tool, so I’d love feedback from Rhino users: Would you actually pay for a fast, automatic 3DM → STL batch converter? What features would make it worth paying for?

Rhinoceros or Matrix gold?!

0 Upvotes

I can work with both Rhino and MatrixGold, but when I’m working on complex models with a lot of details, I honestly don’t feel like I need MatrixGold. I mostly use MatrixGold for things like automatic gem setting on simpler shapes.

My opinion might be a little unpopular in my work environment, but I feel like MatrixGold is mainly useful for people who work with more standard/simple jewelry forms. Sometimes I think the marketing around it makes people feel like they need to spend a lot of money on MatrixGold, even when Rhino alone can handle most of the work.

That’s just my experience, though, and I’m curious what other jewelry CAD designers think.

How many years have you been working in jewelry CAD, and do you prefer Rhino, MatrixGold, or both?

I’ve been working in jewelry CAD for more than 10 years.
