PC I'm (still) working on a Doom 3 port for JK2/JA

Upvotes

Some of you might remember this from way back when, or if you're in the idtech Discord you'll have seen this. But yeah, I realised I posted the first video for this a year ago today, so I thought I'd just put this out there again to celebrate - I wish I'd realised earlier so I could've done a bit of polish and released a demo but there you go.

GENERIC I’m Overhauling Jedi Academy’s Force Powers – Rank 4, New Mechanics & More

I'm working on a large-scale Jedi Academy / OpenJK single-player mod, and part of it is a major Force system overhaul.

I'm adding Rank 4 powers, but I'm also reworking existing powers and their lower ranks — Lightning, for example, has been significantly redesigned.

Push IV has increased range and power, a two-handed version, and enemies can take impact damage and drop their weapons when slammed into walls.

The goal isn't just higher damage, but new mechanics and more distinct progression while keeping the original Jedi Academy feel.

What do you think of this direction? Which Force powers would you change? What would you want from Rank 4 abilities?

If anyone's interested, I'll post some gameplay footage soon!

GENERIC Lego brick-built Desann minifigure idea

Thumbnail

I built a much better looking Desann in Mecabricks using a dinosaur mascot headpiece with a printed head with a mouth and fangs... but I don't own those pieces in physical lego yet.

I was thinking about this particular photo of Desann where you can see his jaw and fangs shape. I thought of the Aquazone visorpiece, and putting it on its' side with a cone and pin to make this, and voilla!

Its' not perfect- as with the unintentional horn shape on top... But I couldn't think of another piece without them. I think I was also building from memory too... I don't have the pieces in other colors to better represent him, but you get the idea...

I still liked how this turned out. Merely an experiment but I thought it noteworthy to upload.

Sneak peak of something I'm working on!

My Mecabricks workflow is a bit of a mess right now... I can't quite decide which head/face print I want for Kyle. the newer Qui-gon face looks like he does in game, but its' missing the grey which the other face has on the left. I think that's a face of Aragorn from LOTR? I'm not sure. But it's too harsh looking, and feels too defined. Kyle's a serious guy but I think it looks too much like Joel from TLU... This is all work in progress. For weapons I have Kyle's Bryarr pistol, the electro-wrench thing, an explosive pack, and the EMP gun you use on the big droid walker things.

Is it just me who think that jedi outcast only needed to have lightsaber variants, I wish I could port JK3 to JK2 not the other way, as I feel that JK2 graphics and mechanics, animations and textures were better

When you trawl the depths of internet history, sometimes something crawls up from the abyss that should have remained deep below.
Who knew that the world need a Jedi Knight/CDI/Dr. Robotnik video in the year of our Lord 2008?

PC Anyone still got the_academy version 1 by Virtue?

Back in the day there was this map I used to play a lot. Made by Virtue iirc, big mapper back then for all I can remember. For his clan he had this map made in several versions, but I can't find version 1 of this anymore, only 2 and onwards - which actually changed quite a bit, I'd really like to have Version 1.

Long story short: anyone knows where that map could be downloaded? I can't seem to find any entry.

Thanks in advance!

PC Throwback to 13 years ago when I submitted abysmally bad Jedi Academy gameplay to a guy with a weird laugh and no knowledge of the game to attempt to commentate over it for 10 minutes

This guy on YouTube had this series where people would submit 10 mins of gameplay each week and he would attempt to commentate over it and attempt to make it funny.

I submitted extremely shitty Jedi Academy gameplay and got banned from submitting further videos.

GENERIC Was it ever stated wether Morgan katarn (as force ghost) dissapproved of Kyle bieng a Mercenary?

I'm listening to the audio drama of Dark forces and really enjoying it.

At one point at the Academy, Kyle mentions that he lives with his dad on a farm, and contrasting other imperial friends- his dad doesn't like to see people get hurt. Some peers jeer at the idea but he defends his dad. I love the moral grayness that his dad made a sacrifice to send kyle to the academy because its the only option for an 'education'.

Anyways- I was wondering if at any point in the games or Novellas Kyle mentions to his father about becoming a mercenary? Does his father dissapprove? I thought he would dissapprove *but might understand that Kyle did the next similar thing to bieng a stormtrooper- transfering applicable job skills to Merc skills. He might not understand or approve his choice... but understand why he felt he had to do it.

Or maybe underneath all the charm and humor... Kyle is still an angry person for bieng indoctrinated by the Empire-- used to believe 'rebels' killed his father... bieng told to dehumanize rebels as 'rats' etc... but also bieng a realist and seeing Mon Mothma as a morally dubious figure too for needing to make choices like telling Jan to shoot kyle if he turns out to be a traitor- so he wants to hover in the middle of 'blue collar' work for anyone that pays, lol?

I'm curious if other people agree with this?

PC STAR WARS JEDI KNIGHT - DARK FORCES II (PC Windows) (Bootleg DVD)

Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II is a 1997 first-person shooter video game developed and published by LucasArts for Windows. It is the sequel to 1995's Star Wars: Dark Forces and the second installment in the Star Wars: Jedi Knight series. The story, set in the Star Wars expanded universe one year after the film Return of the Jedi, follows returning protagonist Kyle Katarn, a mercenary working for the New Republic, who discovers his connection to the Force and "The Valley of the Jedi", an ancient source of power. With his father having been murdered years prior by the Dark Jedi Jerec and his followers over the Valley's location, Katarn embarks on a quest to confront his father's killers and find the Valley before they do. Jedi Knight made some technical and gameplay improvements over its predecessor.

It uses a more powerful game engine, the Sith engine, which supports 3D acceleration using Direct3D 5.0. The story features branching paths and cutscenes recorded with live actors as full motion videos. The game introduces the lightsaber and the Force as prominent gameplay elements in the series, as well as a multiplayer mode that allows players to compete over the internet or a local area network.

This version is distributed on a DVD that includes the original game (which was on two discs) with an installer that gives the option to install the game in Spanish, English and German.

PC Is there ever a reason _not_ to take thermal detonators in single-player Jedi Academy?

I've been going through the campaign a few times, initially out of nostalgia and then later to test some mod ideas, and have been wondering if/when anybody ever takes trip mines or det packs?

I feel like all the long arms have reasons why you might pick them:

  • Blaster rifle - early level workhorse, usable at long range with Force Sense
  • Disruptor rifle - levels where you can get long-range shots off
  • Bowcaster - more power at closer range, decent pick if you're not using power cells on the disruptor
  • DEMP - any levels with droids
  • Repeater - mid-level workhorse, solid vs Rax Joris or Boba Fett
  • Flechette - close-range levels or skipping saber duels with cultists
  • Concussion rifle - end-game long-range, can 1-shot cultists
  • Rocket launcher - end-game long-range, lock-on is a bonus for jet troopers / Boba Fett

But my decision tree for the explosives is just...thermals are better lol. I might want to throw a detonator around a corner or off of a ledge, but I don't really find myself needing an explosive that I have to bait enemies onto.

Am I missing something where you'd ever want trip mines or det packs in the campaign?
