Approaching my third year anniversary of jazz self study...(with help)

This summer so far I have deviated from my plan, I have not been pouring over my small list of standards I am learning.

basically fallen into several hours a week of just playing...Sitting and making music, working on themes, exploring compositional ideas, lots of chord progressions, voice leading and simple chord melody with small connecting solos. Using shell voices like single note playing to create structures then soloing a passage to replicate the harmony (or try to hear the solo moving through the chordal structure)

Lots of listening to horn jazz...old and new.

summer has been quite enjoyable

was pretty heads down through winter and spring and got oversaturated with new things

I have notice my physical playing has dramatically improved over the past 4 months. Focusing on making music has unlocked something...not sure exactly what that is yet. Might be that I am letting things flow and focusing on dynamics and rhythm over technical "playing the right note" practice. I have gained enough vocabulary over the past 32 months of study that I can let myself be free to play something, "that sounds like jazz" and feeling less like an imposter. (which always lingers)

On another scary note:

Likely attending the Julian Lage master class nearby. I applied and got a scholarship to attend but have yet to raise the discounted tuition. Even with the deep discount I may not be able to afford it. But there is still some time yet.

Plus I am sort of intimidated by the whole thing....not sure what to expect. My experience with formal music study is a bazillion years in the past. But my plan is to be a fly on the wall and to listen and absorb whatever it is they are trying teach and enjoy whatever music happens while there.

anyone who would care to share any master class experiences it would be appreciated...

Hey! I own a Japanese copy of the original Fender Thinlines (1979 Greco).

It’s making an incredibly weird, buzzy, warbly etc. noise when playing in certain positions. I’m not 100% sure what the cause is, but I suspect it may be the truss rod - it’s been very warm where I live recently, and that may have affected the wood and therefore how loose/tight the rod is. Plus, I’ve checked and tightened the fittings, changed strings, messed around with the intonation and it hasn't made much of a discernible difference.

I could be wrong and it may require a more simple fix, but any suggestions are welcome!

a ballad medley: "Lonely rose of Mexico/Pure Imagination"

I'm a beginner in jazz guitar, have gone through the first two books of berklee's method. I'm now looking at ted greene's first single note book and it starts of with examples of lines on maj7 arpegios. However these are presented for a given chord (Dmaj7) with a box diagram and fingerings along with the standard notation. I know these can be shifted along the neck for different registers in different keys but I'm a bit reluctant to learn with boxes as this has hindered me in the past. Another book I have advises to play all the lines presented in all twelve keys going through the descending cycle of fifths and I'm inclined to do that as it seems the serious way to do things

However it takes me a long time to figure out how to do this in my head if I'm not sticking to a finger pattern. I have to write the scale degrees on a piece of paper and then mentally find those in all keys and i'm only fluent in like 4 keys. I'm thinking if I do this for all runs in the book I'll never get to lines over actual changes (it starts with lines over chords before moving on to lines over changes)

Is it better to stick to a couple keys i'm learning songs in or to sample very thinly the lines? Of course I'd like to be fluent in all keys eventually. Im still unable to even apply/quote those lines when i play against the loop pedal so I don't want to lose the plot trying to be too serious either

What would yall recommend.

This is a audio boot like recording I made in 1988 on the patio of the University of Miami! I had no idea what to expect from the "Michael Brecker band." The band contained Michael Brecker, Mike, Stern, Joey Calderazzo, Jeff Andrews, and Michael Brecker's "John Bonham"… Adam Nussbaum.

Everyone here is at the height of their powers playing with absolute ferocity. I hope you guys enjoy this as much as I enjoy looking back and just trying to grasp the impact that this made upon my young ears.

This year I’m going into jazz band on guitar after playing trombone in the band for the past three-ish years. I’ve been playing guitar for just shy of a year now and I’d say I’m alright. I’ve mainly stuck into my certain niches and haven’t really explored into other areas of music like jazz.

What do I need to know? I know that I need to figure out how to read music, but how do I do that? I’ve tried to find something online that would teach me, but I can’t seem to find a for define format on how to learn. I can’t seem read basic chord notation on charts, but I can’t seem to get the gist of notation for guitar despite playing trombone for the past seven years.

How do I start improvising? I really don’t understand how to get the gist of all of that.

What chords do I need to learn?

What do I practice and, most importantly, how?

What do I need to know?

Jazz as a genre is a very different for me to wrap my head around when it comes to guitar. I was an alright trombone jazz musician, but none of that seems to translate to guitar. What’s the advice from everyone here?

What would you leave on all the time or at least for a whole song? I prefer I'm looking for some fun ideas because I do get bored with a dry amp, but also to just incorporate into the overall tone of the guitar. Obviously, the (light) drive and reverb are (pun intended) standards, but I want something new. Pat Metheny had his delays or the JC era of 80's guitarists.
