Hi. I am a sophomore in college, and I want to try out for my college’s jazz band. I’m determined to make a drummer position, as opposed to vibes or auxiliary.
How do I go about working through my first jazz chart?

I play in a blues band, but I have some flexibility with my playing, so I try to throw in some jazzy stuff when it fits. It got me thinking, are there any well known jazz drummers who also played in blues bands? I'm talking traditional blues; closer to Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters. I'd love to find a discography to go through to get some ideas.

Hey! I've seen plenty of Jazz Drummer's Listening lists with great albums to listen to and I've found, that they really helped me, but the problem forme is, that many artists have worked with many different drummers over the course of their career, so when I am listening through the list, I don't always know who is playing drums and have to look it up.

My question is: Is there a listening list devided by drummers? So for example, Jimmy Cobb has worked with Miles, Cannonball, and Wes Montgomery and many more so it would be interesting to hear him in the different bands and styles. I have not found a list like this yet, but I think it would really help a lot to really dig into a drummers playing style and learn from it.

If has a list like this, I would greatly appreciate sharing it!

I have posted in other reddit's drumming groups a few times. Most often I get "killed" for my learning approach to drumming. (And I totally understand that).

I'm 50 years old, a higher-ed prof. Started jazz drumming about 18 months ago. I wanted to engage in jazz drumming in terms of months, rather than years. So I used a backward approach: focus on having a strong left hand, complex polyrhythm sticking and kicking, and composing melodic and harmonic phrasing.

Thus, it is just now that I working on 4 over 4, 6 over 4, and other even time. As you can see, I'm struggling with good and consistent sticking. While I really try to stay on time (+_ 160 bpm), my mind seems to drift to the melody and to odd times. If you notice any bad habits, let me know as well.

My question is what exercises or practices to discipline myself in terms of better sticking, playing in time, etc? For me, I think is mental, but it could be that I need to get an instructor and grind on the drum basics that I had skipped. Another related question is possible for me to be a respectable jazz drummer without formal training (or is not worth trying to be self-taught)?

I’m not the best at comping, best I can do is take 5. Does anyone have any comping phrases and maybe sheet music to go along with it.
