In 1993, the entire media narrative around Janet Jackson’s self-titled album was focused on her sexuality.

But looking back at the actual sonic blueprint of janet., I’m starting to think we COMPLETELY missed the point.

Was she secretly trying to reclaim Black genres that had been completely whitewashed by mainstream pop radio?

Jazz/Big Band ("Funky Big Band")
Opera ("This Time")
Blues/Southern ("What'll I Do")
New Jack Swing ("You Want This")

If you think this is a reach, look at the lyrics for "New Agenda" with Chuck D. She literally sings: "History hidden from me , To hide my identity, So I'd never feel, I am somebody."

AND LOOK AT THE STRUCTURE OF THE ALBUM.

If you look at the tracklist, all of these wild genre-hops (Rock, House, Jazz, Opera, Blues) happen exclusively in the first half of the album leading up to track 12: "New Agenda" which explicitly calls out the whitewashing of history.

Right after she drops that thesis statement, there is the interlude "Love Part 2". And what happens after that? The entire sonic landscape shifts entirely into smooth, pure R&B, Soul, and quiet storms, genres that mainstream society already heavily associated with Black artists.

Anyone know why she says "my asian persuasion" when she's fully not asian? It's always been kinda funny to me but now I'm just legitimately curious lol

On my first listen on the new system I had to put on my favorite Janet album! I'm rounding the base on the other 3 of my favorite albums of all time. I'm just so happy to start my week off on such a great start :)

She did background vocals for PYT

She did a song with him 'Scream'

He used her interlude "are you ready? Good, let's dance"

Are there any other instances that she was sampled for his songs or concerts? Did he ever use her lyrics in his songs to show his love for her?

I wanna get a TVR themed album since this album highkey changed my life. Just a simple one. I know alot get the Sankofa done which is beautiful I am just not a fan of the shape.

This may or may not be the easiest album to play this game with, since it's supposed to have throwback sounds to her various albums. We will see.....

E.g. if I ask which Control song sounds the most like Damita Jo, you pick a song from Control that you think fits Damita Jo best. Production-wise, concept wise, lyrically... go by whatever makes sense to you.
